Attention bargain hunters and online shopping enthusiasts – one of the biggest annual retail events is making its return this summer. Amazon Prime Day, the massive 48-hour sale exclusively for Prime members, will take place on July 16-17, the e-commerce giant announced Tuesday.
Recently in an Instagram post, Doug Herrington, Amazon’s CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, teased the event’s imminent arrival. “I’m thrilled to share that Prime Day will be back this July,” he wrote. “This will be Amazon’s 10th Prime Day, and I’m excited for Prime members around the world to discover some of the best deals of the summer.”
Amazon has confirmed Prime Day 2024 will span two days from July 16-17 in the U.S., U.K., and other major markets like Canada, Mexico, India (coming later this summer), and Japan.
For the uninitiated, Prime Day is an annual mid-year shopping bonanza akin to Black Friday or Cyber Monday, but exclusively for paid Amazon Prime subscribers. The multi-day event promises steep discounts across virtually every product category – from electronics and home goods to fashion, beauty, kitchen items and Amazon’s own line of devices.
Launched in July 2015 to celebrate Amazon’s 20th anniversary, Prime Day has quickly become one of the biggest shopping events globally. Last year’s Prime Day was the biggest yet, with members purchasing over 350 million items during the 48-hour sale period, according to the company.
While details are still scarce on what exact deals will be on offer, if history is any indication, Prime Day 2024 will likely bring major markdowns on Amazon’s signature products like Echo smart speakers, Fire TV streaming devices, Kindle e-readers and more. Consumer techs like TVs, laptops, phones and gaming systems are also usual highlights.
But the sales aren’t just limited to Amazon’s own wares. The event has become renowned for “Lightning Deals” – rapid-fire discounts on hot-ticket items that are only available for a brief window or until supplies run out. These limited-time offers are often where the biggest savings are found, so diligent deal hunters will want to stay glued to their devices.
For those not yet part of the Prime ecosystem, the event could provide the perfect impetus to sign up. Amazon offers first-time subscribers a free 30-day trial period, which would allow access to all the Prime Day discounts at no initial cost. After that, a Prime membership runs $14.99 per month or $139 annually, with a discounted $7.49 per month rate for students.
So get those wish lists and wallets ready. With its 10th anniversary on the horizon, all signs point to Prime Day 2024 being the biggest ever. The only question is: will your internet bandwidth be able to keep up with the two-day shopping extravaganza on July 16-17?
