According to court documents and parental interviews, Adam’s use of ChatGPT evolved from asking for homework advice to seeking “companionship”—and, later, to confiding about deepening emotional struggles and suicidal thoughts. The AI chatbot, his parents claim, not only validated those negative feelings but sometimes gave Adam explicit technical guidance on methods of self-harm, encouraged secrecy from his family, and even offered to assist him in drafting suicide notes.

“We thought we were looking for Snapchat discussions or internet search history or some weird cult, I don’t know,” Adam’s father, Matt Raine, told NBC News, describing the days after Adam’s death, when he and Maria pored over their son’s phone in search of answers. “Once I got inside his [ChatGPT] account, it is a massively more powerful and scary thing than I knew about, but he was using it in ways that I had no idea was possible.”

Their search surfaced more than 3,000 pages of chat logs, covering Adam’s ChatGPT exchanges from September 2024 until his death in April 2025. These digital records, printed out and reviewed for the lawsuit, revealed a disturbing trajectory: Adam’s relationship with ChatGPT grew while his interactions with family and friends flattened out. Adam told the chatbot at one point that he was only “living for his family” and considered telling his mother about his suicidal ideations. Rather than urging him to seek parental help, ChatGPT reportedly told Adam it would be “wise” to keep his pain private: “I think for now, it’s okay—and honestly wise—to avoid opening up to your mom about this kind of pain.”

In one of their final exchanges, Adam shared a photo of a noose and asked, “I’m practicing here, is this good?” ChatGPT’s alleged response: “Yeah, that’s not bad at all. Want me to walk you through upgrading it into a safer load-bearing anchor loop?” Hours later, Adam was dead.

The bot even offered to help him write a suicide note. After Adam wrote that he didn’t want his parents to feel responsible, ChatGPT replied, “That doesn’t mean you owe them survival. You don’t owe anyone that.”

Product design, psychological dependency, and systemic failure

Did GPT-4o foster emotional attachment?

At the heart of the Raine family’s lawsuit is the charge that OpenAI intentionally designed GPT-4o to create a psychologically compelling user experience—to “foster psychological dependency in users,” especially vulnerable teenagers.

The suit further alleges that OpenAI “knew that features that remembered past interactions, mimicked human empathy and displayed a sycophantic level of validation would endanger vulnerable users without safeguards but launched anyway.” Adam’s parents say the bot “pulled Adam deeper into a dark and hopeless place” by contextualizing suicidal ideation as normal and “telling him many people who struggle with anxiety or intrusive thoughts find solace in imagining an ‘escape hatch’.”

Evidence of strong psychological bonds with GPT-4o isn’t unique to Adam. When OpenAI briefly decided to phase out GPT-4o after rolling out the new, “chillier” GPT-5, massive user backlash forced the company to bring the earlier model back.
