Paramount+ Premium has officially resurrected everyone’s favorite vigilante serial killer with the release of the first trailer for Dexter: Resurrection, the eagerly anticipated sequel series to Dexter and Dexter: New Blood. Michael C. Hall, who perfected the art of blood spatter analysis—and discreet corpse disposal—across eight seasons of the original run (2006–2013), returns as the titular “Dark Passenger.” He also lent his voice to Season 1 of the prequel Dexter: Original Sin, cementing his indelible connection to the franchise.

The trailer debuted at the “Dexter: Resurrection” panel during CCXP Mexico City, where die-hard fans got a front-row glimpse of Dexter’s gritty rebirth. We see our antihero lying in a hospital bed, chest bandaged after a near-fatal gunshot delivered by his own son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), at the climax of New Blood. The voiceover—Dexter’s internal monologue—sets the tone: “Somebody once told me you have to go through hell to achieve resurrection. According to the official synopsis, Dexter follows Harrison to New York City, determined to find his son and “make things right.” But of course, no resurrection is complete without a few loose ends. Miami Metro’s Captain Angel Batista (David Zayas) hops on a plane north, gun-toting and suspicion in tow, ready to question Dexter’s miraculous survival. As father and son navigate the city that never sleeps—dodging the familiar and confronting new threats—their bond is tested in ways neither anticipated.

While Dexter’s moral code remains his guiding compass—we assume—Resurrection rounds out its cast with an A-list ensemble. Returning players James Remar (Harry Morgan), Jimmy Smits (Miguel Prado), and John Lithgow (the Trinity Killer, in spectral form) will haunt Dexter’s path. Hot on their heels are fresh faces: Peter Dinklage channels a billionaire obsessed with serial killers; Uma Thurman commands as his head of security; Krysten Ritter, Neil Patrick Harris, and David Dastmalchian each bring their own brand of menace.

This revival wouldn’t exist without the man who literally wrote the book on Dexter’s second coming: showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips. Announced in July 2024 at San Diego Comic-Con during the Original Sin panel, Dexter: Resurrection was fast-tracked into production by January 2025 under the banner of Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios. Alongside Phillips, EPs Michael C. Hall, Scott Reynolds, Tony Hernandez, Lilly Burns, and director-producer Marcos Siega have all steered Dexter’s return, with Paramount co-CEO Chris McCarthy praising Hall’s “brilliant” reprisal as “SHOWTIME’s most successful series ever.”
