New Spotify AI DJ feature lets you request songs by voice

Spotify’s AI DJ now responds to voice requests, letting Premium users craft playlists by mood, genre, or artist, though it’s currently English-only.

Spotify’s AI DJ, first launched in 2023, was a bold experiment in blending artificial intelligence with music curation. The feature, accessible via a prominent “DJ” card in the Spotify app’s Home hub, uses a combination of Spotify’s recommendation algorithms and a synthetic voice (modeled after Spotify’s Head of Cultural Partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan) to deliver a personalized playlist with commentary. Think of it as a radio host who knows your taste inside out, dropping tidbits about why a song fits your vibe. But until now, the AI DJ was a one-way street: it decided what you’d hear, pulling from your listening history and Spotify’s vast data on user preferences.

The new update, announced on May 13, 2025, changes the game. Premium subscribers can now press and hold the “DJ” button in the bottom right corner of the AI DJ interface, wait for a beep, and speak their request. Want “electronic beats for a midday run”? Done. Feeling like “indie tracks I’ve never heard before”? The AI’s got you. You can even get creative with prompts like “music to soundtrack my life as a movie” or “something to vibe to while stargazing.” The AI DJ processes these requests in real-time, pulling from Spotify’s catalog of over 100 million tracks to deliver a tailored mix.

Your browser does not support the video tag.

According to Spotify’s press release, this feature builds on the company’s advancements in natural language processing and its existing AI Playlist tool, which launched in beta last year. That tool let users type text prompts to generate playlists—say, “chill lo-fi for studying” or “90s hip-hop for a road trip.” The AI DJ’s new voice command feature borrows that same flexibility but makes it hands-free, which is a boon for anyone on the move or multitasking.

Using the new feature is straightforward. Open the Spotify app, navigate to the AI DJ (available in the Home or Music tab for Premium users in select markets), and start the DJ session. When you’re ready to make a request, long-press the “DJ” button, listen for the beep, and speak clearly. The AI processes your command and adjusts the playlist on the fly, often with a quick voiceover from “X” to introduce the new vibe. For example, if you ask for “upbeat pop for a workout,” you might hear, “Let’s get that heart rate up with some high-energy pop bangers.”

The AI DJ’s ability to handle nuanced requests is impressive. It can parse specific genres, artists, moods, or even abstract prompts like “music that feels like a rainy day in Paris.” This flexibility comes from Spotify’s investment in AI models that combine user data (your listening history, liked songs, and playlists) with contextual understanding of music metadata (tempo, key, lyrical themes). The result is a system that feels less like a cold algorithm and more like a friend who knows your taste but also surprises you with new finds.

But it’s not perfect. For one, voice commands are the only way to control the AI DJ’s output right now. If you’re in a noisy coffee shop, on a crowded subway, or just not in the mood to talk, you’re out of luck. There’s no text input option, which feels like an oversight given that the AI Playlist feature already supports typed prompts. Spotify hasn’t confirmed whether a text-based option is in the works.

Another hiccup is the feature’s language limitation. Right now, it only supports English voice commands, which could alienate non-English-speaking Premium subscribers in the 50+ countries where AI DJ is available.

Spotify’s decision to let users steer the AI DJ reflects a broader trend in the music streaming wars: personalization is king, but control is the crown. Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music all offer algorithm-driven playlists, but Spotify has consistently led the pack in making users feel like the platform gets them. Features like Discover Weekly, Release Radar, and now the AI DJ have turned Spotify into more than a music library—it’s a curator, a tastemaker, even a vibe-setter. By adding voice requests, Spotify is doubling down on that intimacy, making the app feel less like a tool and more like a conversation.

This move also signals Spotify’s confidence in its AI capabilities at a time when the tech industry is racing to integrate generative AI into everything from chatbots to creative tools. The AI DJ’s voice command feature isn’t just about music—it’s a proof of concept for how AI can interpret human intent in real-time, a skill that could extend to other Spotify features (imagine voice-controlled podcast recommendations or AI-generated workout playlists).

For users, the benefits are immediate. The AI DJ’s new flexibility makes it ideal for moments when you know what you’re craving but don’t have the time or energy to build a playlist from scratch. It’s also a gateway to discovery—asking for “indie tracks I’ve never heard before” might introduce you to a band like Snail Mail or Big Thief, which you might’ve missed in Spotify’s algorithm-driven feeds. And for those who love the quirky side of Spotify’s AI, prompts like “music to pretend I’m in a Wes Anderson film” deliver playlists that are as delightful as they are eccentric.

The AI DJ’s voice command feature is a small but strategic move in this chess game. It keeps Spotify ahead of the curve in AI-driven music curation while addressing a common user gripe: the desire for more control over algorithmic playlists.

Looking ahead, Spotify has plenty of room to refine the AI DJ. Adding text-based controls, expanding language support, and fine-tuning the AI’s interpretation of complex prompts could make the feature even more versatile. There’s also potential for deeper integration with other Spotify features—imagine asking the AI DJ to pull songs from your Wrapped 2024 recap or to create a mix based on a podcast you just listened to. For now, though, the voice command update is a win for Premium subscribers, offering a fresh way to interact with the music they love.

If you’re a Spotify Premium user, the updated AI DJ is ready to take your requests. Whether you’re chasing a specific vibe, rediscovering an old favorite, or exploring something new, this feature puts you in the driver’s seat. So, next time you fire up Spotify, press that “DJ” button, speak your mind, and see where the music takes you. Just maybe don’t do it on a quiet train ride.
