American Airlines—the nation’s busiest carrier—has announced that it now supports Apple’s innovative Share Item Location feature. This development is set to ease the process of reuniting passengers with misplaced luggage, thanks to the seamless integration of Apple’s AirTag.

For travelers, losing luggage can turn a routine trip into a stressful ordeal. Recognizing this common frustration, American Airlines has teamed up with Apple to harness the power of AirTag tracking. With the recent rollout of Apple’s iOS 18.2 update, the Share Item Location feature now enables AirTag users to generate a secure, shareable link within the Find My app. This link provides American Airlines with an interactive map showing either the real-time or last known location of a missing item.

A spokesperson for American Airlines explained, “We’ve introduced the ability for customers to easily and securely share the location of their AirTag or Find My network accessory directly with the airline.” In practical terms, should a bag be delayed or lost during a trip involving a segment to or from a U.S. airport, passengers can simply scan a QR code at the baggage office. This quick step initiates the claim process, allowing the airline to access the location data and begin efforts to recover the luggage.

How it works

Apple’s AirTag is a small, battery-powered device that attaches to your belongings—be it your suitcase, backpack, or even your keys. Once an AirTag is in place, the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac can track its whereabouts using a vast network of Apple devices. With the Share Item Location feature, users can create a temporary, shareable link that grants selected parties access to location data via an interactive map.

This link is designed with privacy and security in mind:

  • Time-limited access: The link expires automatically after seven days, ensuring that your tracking information isn’t accessible indefinitely.
  • Deactivation upon recovery: Once the lost item is recovered, the link is deactivated to prevent any further tracking.
  • User-controlled sharing: At any time, users can choose to turn off location sharing, putting control firmly in their hands.

American Airlines is not alone in adopting this technology. Major carriers including United Airlines, Delta, and Air Canada quickly integrated Share Item Location into their lost luggage procedures soon after its release. More recently, international airlines such as Lufthansa Group and Virgin Atlantic have also announced support for the feature.

This growing trend reflects the travel industry’s broader commitment to leveraging technology to improve customer service. As airlines compete not just on routes and prices but on the quality of the travel experience, tools like AirTag tracking are proving invaluable. For passengers, it means fewer headaches when something goes awry—and a smoother, more connected travel journey overall.

For the millions of people who rely on air travel each year, especially on a carrier that handled over 226 million passengers last year, this new service could be a game changer. Lost luggage isn’t just an inconvenience; it can disrupt vacations, business trips, and important personal plans. By streamlining the process of tracking down lost bags, American Airlines is taking proactive steps to reduce the stress associated with air travel.

Moreover, this integration highlights how everyday technology is increasingly intersecting with traditional industries. Apple’s AirTag, initially marketed as a personal item tracker, is now evolving into an essential travel accessory. The partnership between American Airlines and Apple exemplifies how tech giants and legacy industries can collaborate to address age-old challenges with modern solutions.

The seamless integration of AirTag tracking into the airline’s operations relies on robust technology and stringent security protocols. At its core, Apple’s Find My network is a crowd-sourced system that uses millions of Apple devices worldwide to help locate lost items. This decentralized approach not only enhances the accuracy of tracking but also ensures that location data remains secure and anonymized.

For American Airlines, incorporating this system into their lost luggage procedures means that the airline now benefits from an extensive, real-time tracking network. The use of QR codes at baggage service offices simplifies the process even further—passengers no longer need to fill out lengthy forms or provide multiple pieces of documentation. Instead, a quick scan and a few taps on their phone can initiate a sophisticated tracking process that puts their lost luggage within reach.
