Microsoft is taking another step toward closing the gap between Apple and Windows ecosystems. The company has begun testing improved file-sharing capabilities for its Phone Link app, now allowing iPhone users to transfer files seamlessly between their phones and Windows PCs. This feature is currently available to members of the Windows Insider Program, with a broader rollout expected soon.

How it works

The updated Phone Link app enables users to share files via the iOS “Share Sheet.” iPhone users can select the “Link to Windows” option, pick a connected Windows PC, and transfer files instantly. On the PC side, users can send files to their iPhone by right-clicking a file, selecting “Share,” and then choosing “My Phone.”

Over the years, Microsoft has worked to enhance Phone Link, especially for Android devices. However, iPhone support has been slower due to Apple’s restrictive ecosystem. Earlier updates allowed for limited iMessage functionality, such as sending and receiving messages, but lacked features like group chats or app mirroring. This new file-sharing capability represents a notable step forward, bringing the app closer to a full-fledged alternative to Apple’s AirDrop.

While Android users benefit from robust features like app mirroring and notification syncing, iPhone users remain limited in their options. Still, these updates suggest Microsoft’s intent to improve cross-platform compatibility, a move that could entice more iPhone users to integrate their devices with Windows PCs.

The update is available in Phone Link version 1.24112.89.0 or higher, and Microsoft plans to extend this feature to all users in the coming months.
