Google Vids is adding a new audio editing feature that lets users separate sound from video clips and edit it independently on the timeline. The update gives creators more flexibility when working with voiceovers, background audio, and video scenes.
Announced on October 23, 2026, the feature lets users extract a video clip’s audio with a single click, turning it into a standalone audio clip. Users can then trim, move, or delete the extracted audio without changing the timing of the original video footage.
The detached audio can also play beneath other video clips or extend across multiple scenes. This makes it easier to keep narration running while visuals change, reposition audio to match different scenes, or remove unwanted sections of a recording.
Google previously limited audio controls to muting or unmuting the entire video clip, with the audio tied to its original scene. The new capability provides more granular control directly within Vids, reducing the need to use a separate editor for basic audio adjustments.
The feature is rolling out gradually, starting October 19, with visibility potentially taking up to 15 days. It is available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts. No additional administrator controls or user settings are required.
