Apple has turned a page-not-found error into a nostalgic trip back to the early 2000s. Apple Music’s website now hides an interactive recreation of the original iPod, complete with its iconic click wheel, music previews, and a secret game tucked away in its settings.
The Easter egg appeared on October 23, 2026, marking the 25th anniversary of Apple announcing the original iPod. Instead of showing a conventional error message, the page displays a virtual first-generation iPod alongside the message, “Page Not Found” and “Give this a spin instead.”
You can try it yourself by opening Apple Music’s 404 page in a web browser. Apple has also created a dedicated iPod Easter egg page, which offers another way to find the hidden player.
A working recreation of the original iPod
The virtual iPod recreates the look and feel of Apple’s first music player, including its monochrome display, circular click wheel, and familiar menu system. Rather than serving as a static illustration, the device is interactive, allowing visitors to navigate its menus and browse music using the on-screen controls.
The music library features artists such as Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Coldplay, Daft Punk, Drake, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Fall Out Boy, Foo Fighters, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, and U2, among others.
Selecting a song lets you listen to a 90-second preview, bringing back the experience of browsing music on an early iPod. It is not a full replacement for Apple Music’s streaming catalog, but it is a fun way to revisit the music and interface associated with the device that helped popularize digital music players.
The experience is particularly fitting given the anniversary. When Steve Jobs introduced the original iPod on October 23, 2001, Apple presented it as a portable music player capable of putting 1,000 songs in your pocket. The device became a defining product for the company and helped reshape how people carried and listened to music.
There’s a secret Breakout-style game, too
The music player is not the only surprise. Apple has hidden a classic brick-breaking game inside the virtual iPod, giving visitors another reason to explore its menus.
To find it, open Settings, select About, and press and hold the center button on the click wheel. After holding it for a while, the game appears on the screen.
The game is a nod to Breakout, the arcade classic associated with Apple co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak’s time at Atari in the 1970s. Its inclusion makes the Easter egg more than a simple recreation of an old music player: it connects two memorable chapters of Apple’s history.
How to try Apple Music’s hidden iPod
The Easter egg works on the Apple Music website in a browser, rather than inside the native Apple Music app. If tapping a link automatically opens the app on your phone, copy the URL and paste it directly into your browser instead.
Once the page loads, use the click wheel to scroll through the menus, press the center button to select items, and explore the music library. Then head to Settings → About and hold the center button to uncover the hidden game.
Apple discontinued the iPod touch in 2022, bringing its long-running iPod product line to an end. This small web-based tribute offers fans a chance to revisit the original device without tracking down old hardware or finding a working vintage music player.
It is a fitting anniversary surprise: a broken-link page that turns into a working piece of Apple nostalgia, complete with songs to preview and a game to uncover.
