Google is bringing Docs Live to the Google Docs mobile app, giving eligible users a way to brainstorm ideas, create structured documents, and refine drafts using natural conversation instead of typing everything on a phone. The feature, powered by Gemini, is designed to turn spoken thoughts into organized, context-aware documents, even when users start with little more than a rough idea.

Announced on October 21, 2026, the rollout covers eligible Google Workspace users on Android and iOS, expanding voice-powered document creation to more people working on the go.

Docs Live turns spoken ideas into structured documents

Writing a document on a smartphone can be frustrating, particularly when the goal is to turn scattered thoughts into a polished proposal, meeting summary, or project update. Docs Live aims to simplify that process by letting users explain what they want in their own words while Gemini helps organize the information into a useful first draft.

Rather than requiring users to dictate every sentence exactly as it should appear, Docs Live is designed to work with natural, open-ended conversation. Users can explain their goals, describe the information they want included, and ask Gemini to help write and polish their ideas directly in Google Docs.

The feature can be used for a range of professional documents, including project updates, feature proposals, customer pitches, event plans, and presentation talking points. Users can also provide more specific instructions to guide the result, such as asking for a meeting summary based on notes from a recent call.

Gemini can draw context from Google Workspace

One of Docs Live’s more useful capabilities is its ability to incorporate relevant information from other sources. According to Google, Gemini can securely draw on content from Gmail, Google Drive, Google Chat, and the web to produce documents tailored to the user’s needs.

That means users can describe a document they need without manually searching through emails, opening several files, and copying information between apps. For example, someone preparing a project update could ask Gemini to use relevant information from previous discussions and documents as the basis for a structured draft.

This contextual approach could be particularly helpful when working away from a desk. Ideas that emerge after a meeting or during a commute can be turned into a more organized document without waiting until a user returns to a computer.

The feature also fits into Google’s broader push to make Gemini a conversational assistant across its productivity apps, rather than a tool that users must operate primarily through typed prompts.

Availability and supported plans

Google announced that Docs Live is rolling out to eligible users of the Google Docs mobile app on Android and iOS. The company lists availability for the following plans and editions:

  • Google Workspace Business: Business Standard and Business Plus.
  • Google Workspace Enterprise: Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus.
  • Consumer subscriptions: Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra.
  • Education: Google AI Pro for Education.
  • Other add-ons: AI Expanded Access.

Google says the feature is available through both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. However, access depends on having an eligible plan and the relevant Gemini capabilities enabled.

For Workspace administrators, Docs Live is enabled by default for users who already have Gemini in Google Docs enabled. Administrators can consult Google’s Workspace documentation for details on managing access to Gemini features.

Users can get started through the Google Docs mobile app and follow Google’s official guide to generating documents with voice.

With Docs Live, Google is making mobile document creation less dependent on typing and more suited to the way people often develop ideas: by talking them through first. Its ability to combine voice-driven drafting with information from across Workspace could make it a practical option for producing an initial draft when a laptop isn’t within reach.
