Google is bringing Gemini to more drivers, making it possible to have natural conversations with its AI assistant while navigating, planning stops, and handling everyday tasks on the road. Announced on October 20, 2026, the rollout covers Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, with a new Personal Intelligence feature designed to make the experience more useful by connecting Gemini to information from a user’s Google apps.
The update moves Google’s AI assistant beyond answering general questions. With permission, Gemini can use personal information from Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Search to provide answers tailored to a driver’s plans, preferences, and past activities.
Gemini can connect the dots while you drive
The biggest addition is Personal Intelligence, which lets Gemini retrieve specific information from connected apps and combine details from multiple sources to answer more complicated questions.
For example, drivers heading to the airport can ask Gemini for their flight gate and whether their flight is on time. Rather than manually searching through a confirmation email and checking for updates separately, the assistant can bring those details together in a single response.
The feature can also help drivers find destinations without remembering an address. Someone heading to an appointment could ask Gemini to navigate to their doctor’s office, while a driver trying to revisit a business could ask it to find a car wash shown in a photo taken the previous week.
Gemini can also use conversational context to make navigation more convenient. If a driver wants to visit a coffee shop they discussed the previous day, the assistant can use that context to help locate the destination.
Restaurant recommendations are another example. Drivers can ask for a restaurant along their route that matches their preferences, including specific requirements such as vegetarian food or indoor seating.
These capabilities are particularly useful in a car, where searching through apps and typing addresses can be distracting. Instead, drivers can describe what they need in ordinary language and let Gemini handle the search.
When is Gemini coming to Android Auto and Google built-in cars?
Google says Gemini is available globally on Android Auto, with the rollout of Personal Intelligence beginning on October 20. The company plans to bring the feature to cars with Google built-in over the coming months.
The two platforms work differently. Android Auto connects a compatible Android phone to a vehicle’s infotainment system, while cars with Google built-in have Google’s software and services integrated directly into the vehicle.
For drivers who already use Gemini with Personal Intelligence enabled, the relevant preferences carry over to Android Auto. Those who have not enabled the feature can configure their preferences in the Gemini app’s settings.
Availability can still depend on account eligibility, vehicle compatibility, language, and regional restrictions. Google says Personal Intelligence is rolling out to eligible personal Google accounts belonging to users aged 18 or older. At launch, the feature excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria, and is not available for Google Workspace business, enterprise, or education accounts.
Personal Intelligence remains optional
Connecting personal information to an AI assistant can make it more helpful, but it also raises understandable privacy questions. Google says apps are not connected to Personal Intelligence until users choose to enable the feature, and users can turn it off at any time through Gemini settings.
For cars with Google built-in, Google says personalized responses are available only when the user’s phone is connected to the vehicle. Without Personal Intelligence, drivers can continue using navigation, listening to music, making calls, and asking Gemini questions, but the answers will not be personalized using their connected app information.
That distinction matters because drivers do not have to give Gemini access to their personal information just to keep using their car’s existing connected features.
The update also reflects Google’s broader push to make Gemini useful across the services people already use, rather than limiting it to a standalone chatbot. By bringing personal context into the driving experience, Google is aiming to make common tasks easier to complete through voice alone.
For drivers, the practical benefit is straightforward: less time searching through emails, photos, and saved places, and more ability to ask for what they need naturally while keeping their attention on the road.
