Apple has released the first beta builds of iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, macOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2, and watchOS 27.2, giving developers an early look at the next round of software updates just days after Apple released its major 27-series operating systems.
The company announced the new beta releases on September 16, encouraging developers to test their apps against the latest operating systems and use Xcode 27.2 to take advantage of the corresponding SDK updates.
The new releases arrive alongside a separate note that gives developers an early glimpse at how Apple is handling the upcoming iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. Apple says the device will become available on October 23 and will ship with iOS 27.1 rather than iOS 27.2.
iOS 27.2 beta arrives across Apple platforms
The first 27.2 beta is now available for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch. Apple is asking developers to confirm that their apps continue to work as expected on the new releases and to build and test against Xcode 27.2.
The corresponding releases are iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, macOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2, and watchOS 27.2. Xcode 27.2 is also available as a beta, bringing the SDKs needed to develop for these software versions.
Apple’s iOS 27.2 beta release notes already document several developer-facing changes. For example, the App Tracking Transparency framework now supports an alternative expanded prompt and annual re-prompting for users in the European Union. Apple says the alternative prompt is required for users in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Romania.
For developers using StoreKit, Apple has also listed several fixes in the new beta, including issues involving introductory-offer eligibility, storefront or locale changes, and failed purchases during StoreKit testing.
Xcode 27.2 itself includes Swift 6.4 and the SDKs for Apple’s 27.2 operating systems. Apple also says the new version introduces a JSON-based project format, .xcproj, designed to make projects more readable and easier to merge and edit, including by coding agents.
However, developers looking specifically to build for the iPhone Duo will need to wait for another Xcode release.
iPhone Duo will run iOS 27.1 at launch
Apple’s developer announcement confirms that iPhone Duo will run iOS 27.1 when it goes on sale October 23. The company says iOS 27.1 builds on iOS 27 while adding features specifically designed around the foldable phone’s new hardware and form factor.
This is significant for developers because the iPhone Duo isn’t simply another iPhone with a different screen size. Apple is preparing developers for new layouts, orientations, and ways of using apps across the foldable device.
Apple says Xcode 27.1 will introduce development support for iPhone Duo, including updated SDKs and a simulator capable of handling the device’s new poses and orientations. A beta version of Xcode 27.1 is expected later this month.
Apple has already opened a dedicated developer resource for preparing apps for iPhone Duo, with guidance covering adaptive layouts, multiple displays and scenes, camera experiences, and the device’s new interface patterns.
The timing also makes sense given Apple’s planned launch. iPhone Duo was announced on September 9 and is scheduled to become available on October 23, meaning developers have only a limited window to test and adapt their apps before customers begin receiving the foldable iPhone.
iPhone Duo brings a different app development challenge
The iPhone Duo’s foldable design introduces a new set of conditions that conventional iPhone apps haven’t had to handle in quite the same way.
Apple’s hardware announcement describes a 7.6-inch internal display when the device is opened and a 5.4-inch outer display when it is folded. The two screens share the same aspect ratio, allowing content to scale proportionally between them.
That means developers need to consider how an app behaves as the device moves between different physical configurations rather than simply supporting another fixed screen resolution.
Apple’s developer materials specifically highlight adaptive layouts and multiple displays and scenes, suggesting that applications will need to respond smoothly as users change how the device is positioned and opened.
The company is also planning hands-on workshops and developer Q&As later this month to help developers prepare their apps for the new hardware.
For now, developers can begin testing against the 27.2 releases, while iPhone Duo-specific development will follow with the upcoming Xcode 27.1 beta.
The result is an unusual software-development transition for Apple: the 27.2 beta cycle has already begun, but the company’s most significant new iPhone form factor is being prepared through a separate iOS 27.1 and Xcode 27.1 track ahead of its October launch.
