Amazon is bringing its next-generation Alexa+ assistant to India, marking another major step in the company’s international expansion of its generative AI-powered voice assistant.

Alexa+ begins rolling out in India through an Early Access program on September 16. Amazon says the experience has been specifically adapted for India, with a focus on multilingual conversations, regional accents, and cultural context rather than simply translating Alexa into another language.

That localization is particularly important in India, where conversations often move between English, Hindi, Hinglish, and regional languages. Amazon has supported multilingual Alexa experiences in India for years, including the ability to switch naturally between Hindi and English within the same request.

With Alexa+, Amazon is taking that idea further. The company says the assistant has been designed to understand how people in India actually communicate and to respond more naturally to local accents, expressions, and cultural references.

The upgrade also changes what Alexa can do. Rather than simply responding to individual commands, Alexa+ is designed to understand context, remember preferences, and handle more complicated requests and tasks. Amazon is also bringing its broader AI capabilities to shopping, smart-home control, and other everyday activities.

Amazon says 99% of existing Echo devices in India are compatible with Alexa+, while devices made before 2018 are among those that are not supported. The company is using Early Access to roll out the experience before its broader availability.

Once Early Access ends, Alexa+ will be available to Amazon Prime customers in India at no additional cost. Amazon is also offering access to customers without Prime, with pricing for the Indian market listed at ₹2,000 per month, according to the company’s current launch information.

For Amazon, India is an especially significant market for Alexa. The company says Indian customers interacted with Alexa around 9 billion times over the past year, including more than 1.1 billion smart-home interactions, 42 million shopping interactions, and over 420 million music streams.

Alexa+ therefore isn’t simply another international rollout. Amazon is using the India launch to show how its AI assistant can adapt to the way people actually speak and interact at home, while making the jump from basic voice commands to more capable, conversational assistance.
