Google is making the Gemini app more useful for everyday productivity with a new feature that lets users generate, preview, and edit files directly inside their conversations. Instead of downloading a generated document and opening another application to make changes, users can now work with supported file formats without leaving Gemini.

Announced on October 29, 2026, the update brings file editing capabilities to the Gemini app, covering documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, Markdown files, text files, and code. The idea is straightforward: Gemini can now serve as both an AI assistant and a workspace where users can create and refine their files.

Edit files without leaving Gemini

Previously, users could ask Gemini to generate content or create files, but making additional changes often meant moving between applications. The new experience brings more of that workflow directly into the chat interface.

Users can generate a file, preview its contents, and expand the preview into a full-screen editing experience. They can then type changes directly into the document or highlight specific sections to ask Gemini questions and request targeted edits.

This makes the experience more flexible than simply asking an AI chatbot to produce a downloadable file. For example, someone working on a presentation can highlight a section and ask Gemini to refine its wording. Similarly, users can select text in a document and request changes without having to explain which part needs attention all over again.

Gemini can also make changes to both text and visuals, giving users another way to refine the contents of their files through natural-language instructions.

Supported file formats and platform availability

Google is bringing the feature to several commonly used file formats, although availability depends on the platform.

On the web, Gemini supports previews and editing for Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, PDFs, Markdown files, TXT files, and code. PDF preview and editing are also available through the Gemini mobile app.

That means mobile users can work with PDFs directly in Gemini, while users who want to edit spreadsheets, presentations, or other supported formats will need to access the web version.

Google has also demonstrated how the feature can work with existing material. In one example, a user uploads handwritten lecture notes and asks Gemini to turn them into a PDF study guide. After generating the document, the user can manually edit it, highlight particular sections, ask Gemini to change text or visuals, and continue asking questions about the content.

This could be particularly useful for students who want to turn class notes into study materials, professionals preparing documents, or anyone who regularly works with spreadsheets and presentations.

Gemini’s file editing is available to everyone

The new file generation, preview, and editing capabilities are rolling out to all Gemini users in every language where the Gemini app is available. Google has not restricted the feature to paid Gemini subscription tiers in its announcement.

The update also reflects Google’s broader effort to make Gemini useful beyond answering questions and generating text. By bringing file creation and editing into the same interface, Google is making it easier to move from an initial idea to a finished document without constantly switching between tools.

There are still platform differences to consider, particularly the web-only support for formats beyond PDFs. Nevertheless, having document previews, direct editing, and AI-assisted refinements together in Gemini makes the app a more capable productivity workspace.
