Video editing can be one of the most time-consuming parts of running a YouTube channel, especially when the work involves repetitive timeline adjustments rather than the creative decisions behind the video. YouTube is now looking to make that process more conversational by bringing Gemini into a new editing assistant for Shorts and the YouTube Create app.

The company says Gemini was already integrated into Shorts and YouTube Create earlier this year. In August 2026 alone, hundreds of thousands of channels used the AI capabilities each day. YouTube also points to its first GenAI trends report, which found that 72% of U.S. video posters between the ages of 14 and 44 had used AI to help create or edit videos during the previous year.

The new conversational editing assistant takes that idea further. Instead of requiring creators to perform every small editing adjustment manually, the tool lets them describe what they want and work through the editing process through an ongoing conversation.

Creators can start with suggested prompts or enter their own instructions to generate a first draft. From there, they can continue chatting with the assistant to make changes to the video. YouTube says Gemini can provide personalized suggestions for tasks such as reordering frames, trimming footage and syncing music to the beat.

The interesting part is that YouTube isn’t positioning this as a replacement for the traditional editing timeline. Creators can move back and forth between the AI assistant and manual editing, making iterative changes as they refine the video.

That makes the feature less like a traditional one-click AI video generator and more like a conversational editing partner. A creator could use Gemini to handle the tedious adjustments, then jump back into the timeline to make the creative decisions themselves.

YouTube describes the goal as handling the repetitive parts of editing so creators can spend more of their time on storytelling. The new assistant is being integrated into both Shorts and the YouTube Create app, extending Gemini’s role from helping generate content to becoming part of the editing workflow itself.
