Microsoft is putting a hard limit on how much cloud gaming time Game Pass subscribers can use each month, marking a significant change for players who have come to rely on Xbox Cloud Gaming as an alternative to downloading games or owning a console.

Starting in November 2026, Xbox Game Pass subscribers will receive a fixed number of cloud gaming hours each month depending on their plan. Once those hours are used, players will have the option to purchase additional streaming time through the Xbox Store.

Xbox Game Pass cloud gaming gets monthly limits

The new system will give each Game Pass tier a specific monthly cloud gaming allowance. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will receive 15 hours per month, while Premium subscribers will get 10 hours and Essential subscribers will receive 5 hours.

Game Pass planIncluded cloud gaming time
Game Pass Ultimate15 hours/month
Game Pass Premium10 hours/month
Game Pass Essential5 hours/month

Those limits represent a major shift from the current system, where eligible Game Pass subscribers can use cloud gaming without a monthly hour cap. Microsoft says it expects the change to affect around 4% of Game Pass subscribers.

For players who regularly spend dozens of hours gaming through the cloud, however, the impact could be considerably larger than that percentage suggests. Once a subscriber reaches their monthly allowance, Microsoft will let them purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store.

The company has not yet revealed how much those additional hours will cost. Microsoft says pricing, purchasing options, available hours and certain cloud gaming features may vary by market, with more information coming before the changes take effect in November.

You won’t necessarily need Game Pass to stream

Microsoft is also introducing a separate way to access Xbox Cloud Gaming without a Game Pass subscription.

Beginning in November, players will be able to purchase cloud playtime directly through the Xbox Store and use those hours to stream eligible games they already own on supported devices. That gives occasional cloud gamers another option instead of paying for a recurring Game Pass subscription.

The approach could be particularly useful for players who only want to stream occasionally, or for people who own an Xbox game but don’t want to maintain a Game Pass membership.

Microsoft also points to another potential benefit: Xbox One owners can use cloud gaming to access eligible games designed for Xbox Series X|S without immediately upgrading their console. The company says it will continue adding cloud support for more games throughout the year.

Microsoft says cloud gaming costs are driving the change

Microsoft’s explanation is fairly straightforward: cloud gaming becomes more expensive to operate as more people use the service and spend longer periods playing.

The company says introducing monthly limits will help it continue offering cloud gaming while investing in reliability and performance. At the same time, Microsoft acknowledges that the practical result for some players will be a higher cost.

That makes the pricing of extra hours particularly important. The monthly allowances themselves may be enough for occasional cloud sessions, but players who use cloud gaming as their primary way to play could quickly run through their included time.

Microsoft says it will provide additional details in November covering pricing, additional-hour purchases, eligible games, market availability and how players will be able to check their remaining cloud gaming time.

For now, the biggest change is clear: Xbox Cloud Gaming is moving away from effectively unlimited access for eligible Game Pass subscribers toward a metered model, while simultaneously opening the door to pay-as-you-go streaming for people who own supported games but don’t subscribe to Game Pass.
