Xbox 25th anniversary: third-party brands go all-in on OG green

Microsoft and its partners are marking Xbox's 25th birthday with a lineup of translucent green accessories that go beyond the console.

Xbox is turning 25, and Microsoft is leaning hard into one of gaming’s most recognizable color cues: translucent green plastic. The company has announced a Designed for Xbox 25th Anniversary Collection that brings together accessories from Razer, 8BitDo, Backbone, PowerA, and GameSir, all built around a nostalgic design language connected to the original Xbox era.

It is a fitting way to mark a milestone for a brand that arrived in 2001 as the new, slightly disruptive player in the console business. The original Xbox itself was mostly black, but its glowing green center badge, oversized Duke controller, and later translucent hardware variants helped establish an aesthetic that has lived on in the memories of a generation of players. Microsoft is now carrying that visual identity into the modern Series X era – and inviting third-party hardware makers along for the ride.

The broader anniversary campaign is centered on the Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition console and matching X25 Special Edition Wireless Controller, both in translucent “OG Green.” The console bundle is scheduled to launch on November 13 in select markets for $899.99 in the U.S., while the controller is also being sold separately (for $79.99). But the third-party accessory lineup is arguably the more interesting part of the celebration, because it takes the same retro theme beyond the living room console.

Razer is contributing three products aimed at PC and cross-platform players: the Basilisk V3 Pro 35K wireless mouse, the BlackWidow V4 75% mechanical keyboard, and Hammerhead V3 X HyperSpeed wireless earbuds. The keyboard is the most Xbox-specific of the bunch in practical terms, as this edition includes an Xbox key designed to launch Game Bar, alongside the compact, hot-swappable layout and Chroma RGB lighting already associated with the BlackWidow V4 75% line.

The Basilisk V3 Pro 35K, meanwhile, gives the collection a desktop centerpiece. It pairs its anniversary styling with a 4-way scroll wheel and Razer’s Focus Pro 35K Optical Sensor Gen-2, while Razer rates it for up to 140 hours of wireless use. It is clearly a premium mouse first and a collectible second, which may make it more appealing than a purely decorative anniversary product for players who spend as much time in PC games as they do on Xbox consoles.

Razer’s Hammerhead V3 X HyperSpeed earbuds extend the theme to portable gaming. They support both a low-latency 2.4 GHz connection and Bluetooth 5.3, with the charging case able to switch between those wireless modes; Xbox says the set provides up to 35 hours of total battery life, including up to 10 hours from the earbuds themselves. That makes the green finish less of a novelty and more of a visual option for anyone juggling a gaming PC, phone, tablet, or handheld.

Elsewhere, 8BitDo has put the anniversary treatment on its Ultimate Charging Dock for Xbox Controllers. The translucent green dock works with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One wireless controllers, bringing a small but useful piece of the collection into setups that may not need another special-edition controller. It is probably the most understated product in the range, but it also captures the practical appeal of this campaign: nostalgia does not have to sit in a display case.

Mobile and handheld gaming are getting considerable attention, too. GameSir’s X5 Lite for Xbox arrives in translucent green with official Xbox licensing and Apple MFi certification, supporting iOS and Android devices for players who use Xbox Game Pass or other mobile titles. Backbone is taking a different approach with its Pro Xbox 25th Anniversary Edition, which will come in a blind-box format with one of three heritage colorways: Iconic Blue, Bold Orange, or Crystal Clear.

That choice is a little unexpected in a collection dominated by green, but it speaks to the larger point of the anniversary: Xbox’s early visual identity was never just one shade. The colorful face buttons, black-and-white Duke controller buttons, transparent special editions, and neon green logo all belong to the same early-2000s hardware moment. The X25 Wireless Controller itself nods to that history with classic ABXY button colors, bumpers that reference the Duke’s black and white buttons, and a transparent rear section that reveals a classic Xbox logo.

PowerA rounds out the lineup with an Xbox Sling Bag designed for the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X handhelds. It is not a bag for carrying an Xbox console, despite the name. Instead, it has four compartments for a handheld, accessories, a controller, a headset, and a phone, plus a padded main compartment, thumbstick protectors, cable routing, and a wide shoulder strap. The bag is more restrained than the translucent gear, using the limited-edition anniversary design without turning the entire product into a bright green statement piece.

There is an understandable risk with retro hardware collections: they can feel like companies are selling memories rather than making better products. But this one largely avoids that trap because the design is attached to accessories people can genuinely use every day. A charging dock, mobile controller, mechanical keyboard, gaming mouse, earbuds, and handheld bag cover different kinds of Xbox players rather than forcing everyone toward the same collectible.

The translucent green look will not be for everyone, and that is probably the point. Anniversary hardware works best when it feels distinct, a little playful, and slightly excessive – like a physical reminder of the period it is celebrating. In this case, Microsoft and its partners are not trying to make Xbox hardware disappear into a minimalist entertainment center. They are making it visible again, and for longtime fans, that familiar shade of green may be enough to bring back memories of booting up an original Xbox for the first time.
