X, formerly known as Twitter, has rolled out two new subscription plans. The headliner is the “Premium Plus” plan, priced at $16 per month (or $168/year), which promises to deliver the most substantial reply boost for subscribers. Notably, this plan not only provides users with an enhanced reply feature but also eliminates ads from their “For You” and “Following” feeds. A detailed overview of the subscription features reveals that Premium Plus aims to provide a more premium and ad-free Twitter experience.
Premium Plus takes the foundation laid by X’s standard “Premium” plan (previously Twitter Blue) and builds upon it. Premium subscribers enjoy an array of benefits such as a coveted blue checkmark, tweet editing capabilities, extended character limits, longer video uploads, secure encrypted direct messaging, and more.
In addition to the Premium Plus offering, X has introduced a more budget-friendly option known as “Basic,” which comes in at just $3 per month (or $32/year). However, it’s important to note that this plan does not offer the coveted blue checkmark for verification, and subscribers can expect only a “small boost” to their replies. Moreover, the Basic plan does not include the perk of reduced ads or access to X’s media studio.
It’s worth mentioning that both of these new subscription plans are currently available exclusively through the web. The standard Premium subscription, which doesn’t include the enhanced features of Premium Plus, can be obtained for $8 per month (or $84/year) when purchased directly.
This move by X is part of a broader strategy to find new revenue streams under the ownership of Elon Musk, who took over the platform the previous year. Musk has been actively exploring ways to monetize the platform, even going as far as introducing a nominal $1 per year fee for users in New Zealand and the Philippines. Furthermore, Musk has introduced a range of new features to X, including live streaming, video and audio calling capabilities, and has expressed plans to venture into the realm of banking services.
