Workday for Google Sheets cuts out manual CSV work

Apparently, downloading a CSV and uploading it into Google Sheets was one step too many.

Workday and Google have teamed up to bring Workday Adaptive Planning directly into Google Sheets, eliminating one of the most exhausting tasks known to enterprise finance teams: downloading a CSV and uploading it somewhere else.

Yes, really.

Workday for Google Sheets is a new add-on available through the Google Workspace Marketplace. It connects Workday Adaptive Planning directly with Google Sheets and Google Slides, while bringing Workday’s AI-powered “Ask Workday” capabilities along for the ride.

And I have one question: How lazy are you guys?

Apparently, quite lazy.

To be fair, Workday is solving a real workflow problem. Financial analysts often need to move planning data between systems, build reports, compare forecasts with actual results, investigate variances, and then turn all of that into something people can actually understand.

Workday for Google Sheets is designed to keep that process inside Sheets instead of forcing users to manually download CSV files from Adaptive Planning. The add-on can pull live Workday Adaptive Planning accounts, dimensions, and time periods into a spreadsheet, where users can rearrange the data and refresh reports as needed.

But the AI part is where things get suitably 2026.

With “Ask Workday,” users can ask questions in natural language to generate summaries and variance analysis. It can compare plan versions with actual results and break down what’s driving performance across different periods and dimensions.

There is also automated anomaly detection, which looks for unexpected data points, outliers, and changes in trends across account hierarchies. And because apparently manually deciding which chart to use is another unacceptable burden, Workday can generate charts and tables from custom queries and let users switch between visualization formats.

The resulting reports can also be copied into new spreadsheet tabs for additional analysis or exported directly into Google Slides.

So, essentially:

Download CSV? No.

Upload CSV? No.

Copy data around five different spreadsheets? No.

Ask AI to summarize the financial variance? Yes.

And this is where the whole thing becomes wonderfully enterprise.

I actually asked Gemini whether this sounded a little lazy, and its response was considerably less diplomatic. It described the broader idea as taking a few minutes of manual friction, putting an AI interface on top of it, and presenting the result as revolutionary digital transformation.

Honestly, that is a pretty good description of enterprise software in 2026.

But there’s an important distinction here. Workday for Google Sheets isn’t simply slapping a chatbot onto a spreadsheet. The integration connects Sheets directly to Adaptive Planning data, allowing users to work with live planning information rather than repeatedly exporting static files. That could eliminate a genuinely annoying part of financial reporting workflows.

The feature is available now through the Google Workspace Marketplace. Organizations need a Workday Adaptive Planning license, and administrators must enable Workday for Google Sheets and Ask Workday before users can sign in through Extensions > Workday for Google Sheets > Workday.

It’s available to Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts, provided they have the required Workday Adaptive Planning license.

So yes, there’s a legitimate productivity story here.

But somewhere in a corporate office, a finance analyst has just been saved from downloading a CSV, opening Google Sheets, uploading the file, and clicking a few buttons.

The future is here.

And apparently, it has decided that three clicks were three clicks too many.
