WhatsApp is making it easier to bring people into conversations with a new guest calling feature that lets users invite anyone to join a call, even if they don’t have a WhatsApp account. The change removes one of the barriers to using the messaging platform for calls, particularly when someone wants to connect with a friend, family member, or colleague who uses a different messaging service.

Announced by Meta, the feature introduces a way to join WhatsApp calls without requiring every participant to sign up for the service. Instead of asking someone to install WhatsApp and create an account before joining a conversation, users can share an invitation link that allows guests to participate in a call.

How WhatsApp guest calling works

The idea behind guest calling is straightforward: a WhatsApp user can create a call invitation and share it with someone who doesn’t have an account. The recipient can use the invitation to join the conversation without going through the usual account registration process.

This could be particularly useful for quick conversations with people who don’t regularly use WhatsApp, including work contacts, new acquaintances, or family members who prefer another messaging platform. It also makes WhatsApp a more practical option when organizing a group conversation where not everyone uses the same app.

Guest calling builds on WhatsApp’s existing support for call links, which already lets users invite other WhatsApp users to calls without adding everyone to a contact list first. The new capability extends that convenience to people outside the platform’s account system.

Why guest calling matters

WhatsApp is widely used for messaging and voice and video calls, but requiring an account can make it less convenient when a conversation involves someone who doesn’t use the service. Guest calling addresses that limitation by making participation easier without requiring everyone to become a WhatsApp user.

The feature could also make WhatsApp more useful for informal meetings and one-off conversations. Someone could share a call invitation with a person who simply needs to join a discussion, rather than asking them to commit to setting up another messaging account.

However, joining a call as a guest is different from having a WhatsApp account. Guests shouldn’t assume that they will gain access to the platform’s messaging features, contact lists, or other account-based services simply by joining a call.

Meta’s announcement introduces guest calling as another step in making WhatsApp calls more accessible. The practical impact will depend on how the feature rolls out and how easily people without accounts can join calls across supported devices.

WhatsApp guest calls are free, end-to-end encrypted, and have no time limits. Hosts retain control over who joins, while guests can participate without sharing their phone numbers with other participants.

Guests can join calls from a computer browser

One important detail is that guest calling doesn’t open up the entire WhatsApp platform to people without accounts. Only existing WhatsApp users can create call links, and guests must enter their names and wait for the host to approve their entry.

Once admitted, guests can join one-to-one and group calls with up to 32 participants. They can also use supported calling features, including computer screen sharing, reactions, and the ability to raise a hand during a conversation.

WhatsApp is also keeping some boundaries in place for privacy and call management. Guests cannot see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages through WhatsApp, or directly add other people to the call. Hosts can remove guests whenever necessary.

WhatsApp is adding Google Calendar and Outlook integrations

Guest calling isn’t the only change Meta has announced. WhatsApp also plans to introduce calendar integrations later in 2026, allowing users to create WhatsApp call links directly from Google Calendar or Outlook.

The planned integrations will let users connect their WhatsApp accounts through a plugin and include a call link in a calendar invitation. Invitees will then be able to join whether or not they have a WhatsApp account.

Together, these changes move WhatsApp calling beyond conversations between existing users. They make it easier to use the service for meetings, tutoring sessions, collaborative work, and other conversations where participants may not all use the same app.

The central idea is simple: people should be able to join a conversation without having to sign up for another messaging service first.
