The social network once synonymous with the blue bird, hashtags, and tweets has officially transitioned to a new identity: X.com. In a definitive move by Elon Musk, typing in Twitter.com now redirects users to the rebranded domain, a significant step in Musk’s ambitious reimagining of the platform.
Visitors to X.com are greeted with a message at the bottom of the login page, stating, “We are letting you know that we are changing our URL, but your privacy and data protection settings remain the same.” This announcement aims to reassure users amidst the significant branding shift.

The transition to X.com marks the culmination of a series of changes Musk has been implementing since acquiring the platform. The rebranding efforts have been visible for some time, with the official account, mobile apps, and the rebranded “X Premium” subscriptions (previously known as Twitter Blue) already reflecting the new identity. Despite these changes, the platform’s URLs had stubbornly remained under twitter.com, creating a disjointed user experience.
This domain shift began to gain traction as early as August of last year when some users noticed x.com links appearing in the share sheets of X’s iOS app. However, the transition has not been without its challenges. The slow and sometimes confusing rollout has inadvertently facilitated phishing attacks, according to cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs.
Elon Musk’s connection to the x.com URL dates back to 1999 when he launched a business under the same name, which later merged with what would become PayPal. Musk’s vision for the current iteration of X.com is to transform it into a multi-faceted “everything app,” akin to China’s WeChat, which integrates messaging, social media, and financial services into a single platform.
