Meta’s microblogging platform, Threads, is rolling out a global update that’s poised to make finding content a whole lot easier. Over the next few weeks, users will see a much-requested enhancement: search filters allowing you to refine results by date and account. It’s a notable improvement over the current basic keyword search, which sorts content by “Top” or “Recent” posts.

With the update, a settings icon in the search bar will let you set parameters like “After date,” “Before date,” and “From profile,” helping narrow down specific threads. This upgrade aligns Threads more closely with the search capabilities of competitors like X (formerly Twitter) and Bluesky, although there’s still room for growth.

Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, confirmed the update after earlier testing. This is part of a broader effort by Meta to respond to user feedback, including other features like custom Following feeds and algorithm adjustments to prioritize posts from accounts you follow. Additionally, Mark Zuckerberg recently announced tests that could allow users to default to their Following feed rather than the algorithmic For You feed.

These changes come at a pivotal time, as users dissatisfied with X have increasingly migrated to alternatives like Bluesky. While Threads has historically been cautious about becoming a platform for breaking news or hard politics, it’s clear that Meta sees value in refining its real-time communication tools. However, unlike X, Threads still applies moderation filters to search results, meaning it won’t surface every relevant post, even with these new features.

This update is another step in Meta’s bid to make Threads a serious competitor in the microblogging space, offering users better ways to navigate the platform and find content efficiently. While it’s not yet a full replacement for the likes of X, it’s a move in the right direction.
