Telegram now lets you add member tags – here’s how it works

Want “Admin”, “Designer” or “CS Student” beside your name in group chats? Telegram’s new member tags feature makes that possible in a couple of taps.

Telegram is rolling out a small but very useful upgrade for group chats: member tags – short labels that sit right next to your name so everyone instantly knows who you are in that community, whether that’s “Admin”, “Designer”, “CS Student”, or “Mod Team”.

Think of tags as quick context in busy groups; instead of explaining yourself every time you join a conversation, your role or interest travels with your messages and makes it easier for others to know when to loop you in or ask you something specific.

Right now, member tags are controlled at the group level, so everything starts with the admin. Group owners and admins can decide whether everyone can set their own tag or whether tags are locked down and assigned only by admins, which is particularly handy in workspaces, school groups, or official communities that want consistent formatting and verified roles.

To enable member tags in your group, an admin needs to open the group’s settings, head to Permissions, and switch on the option called “Edit Own Tags” – once that’s active, regular members can add or tweak the label that appears next to their name in that specific chat.

Your browser does not support the video tag.

If the admin prefers stricter control, they can keep “Edit Own Tags” turned off and manually assign tags to members instead, effectively turning tags into lightweight role badges that help everyone quickly recognize moderators, support staff, or organizers without changing display names.

Telegram also gives group admins a visual advantage: tags assigned to admins are always shown in a different color, so their role stands out in the chat, making it much easier for newcomers to identify who’s running the place and who to ping when something needs attention.

Once tags are set up, using them is completely automatic – you just chat as usual and your chosen label quietly rides along next to your name, helping you “introduce” yourself in neighborhood groups, signal your expertise in topic-based communities, or even just show off a fun identity in a casual hangout.
