Sony just dropped some big news: the PS5 Pro is here! Well, almost. Priced at $699.99, this beefed-up version of the PS5 promises more power under the hood, thanks to a larger GPU and advanced ray tracing support. Sounds pretty cool, right? But there’s a catch. If you’re planning on playing your physical game collection on the PS5 Pro, you’re in for a little surprise – it doesn’t come with a disc drive! That’s right, folks. If you want to pop in your beloved discs, you’ll need to fork out an additional $79.99 for a separate drive.
Yup, Sony is offering the PS5 Pro as an all-digital console, meaning no built-in disc drive. So, if you’re attached to your physical games or those crisp 4K Blu-rays, you’ll need to buy the disc drive and install it yourself. Sony’s Hideaki Nishino confirmed the news in a recent PlayStation Blog post, explaining, “PS5 Pro is available as a disc-less console, with the option to purchase the currently available Disc Drive for PS5 separately.” Translation: If you want the console and the drive, you’re looking at a grand total of $779.98.

Sure, it’s a bit of a bummer (okay, maybe more than a bit) that a “Pro” console doesn’t come with a disc drive as standard. It feels like a premium console should give you the whole package, right? But hey, Sony’s been down this road before. Remember when they launched the slim PS5 redesign? They gave us the same setup: buy the all-digital version and add the disc drive later, or just go for the version that comes with the drive.

In any case, the PS5 Pro is set to hit shelves on November 7th, and preorders kick off on September 26th. So, if you’ve been waiting to upgrade and don’t mind shelling out some extra dough for that disc drive, mark your calendars!
