Sony is refreshing its PS5 audio lineup with two new wireless headsets designed to bring the planar magnetic technology introduced with the Pulse Elite to a broader range of players.

The company announced the PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset and the higher-end Pulse Edge Wireless Headset on September 15. Both models use larger, custom studio-inspired planar magnetic drivers, while the Pulse Edge adds active noise cancellation, a detachable boom microphone and additional audio controls for a more premium setup.

Planar magnetic audio comes to the new Pulse lineup

Sony is putting sound quality at the center of the new headsets. Both the PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge use planar magnetic drivers designed to provide better sound separation and spatial accuracy, making directional sounds such as footsteps and reloads easier to identify in games.

The drivers are also larger than those used previously, which Sony says allows the new headsets to produce fuller and deeper bass while maintaining the clarity associated with the Pulse Elite.

The standard PlayStation Pulse uses four magnets per planar driver. Pulse Edge doubles that to eight magnets per driver, giving the premium model a stronger driver design intended to produce richer, deeper bass without losing detail.

Both headsets also support Sony’s PlayStation Link wireless technology. With the included USB-C adapter, players can use the headsets with PS5, PlayStation Portal, PC and Mac, with lossless, ultra-low-latency audio. Compatible Bluetooth devices can be connected simultaneously, making it possible to handle phone audio while continuing to use the PlayStation Link connection for game audio.

AI-powered microphones and a redesigned fit

Sony has redesigned the physical construction of both headsets with an emphasis on comfort and durability. The earcups rotate so the headsets can fold flat, making them easier to carry when they’re not being used.

Both models also include AI-enhanced noise rejection for their microphones. The technology is designed to reduce surrounding noise during voice chat so other players can hear the user more clearly.

The headsets will be available in White and Midnight Black.

Pulse Edge gets the premium treatment

The Pulse Edge is where Sony starts adding features that aren’t available on the standard Pulse.

Alongside its eight-magnet planar drivers, the Edge includes active noise cancellation (ANC) to reduce unwanted environmental sounds. It also has a detachable boom microphone with AI-powered noise rejection. When the boom is removed, a hidden microphone built into the headset can still be used for voice chat.

The Edge also includes dedicated controls for adjusting game audio and chat balance on PS5, along with an audio/microphone jack. Sony is bundling a carrying case as well, and the headset uses what the company describes as premium materials.

That creates a fairly clear hardware split between the two models. The regular Pulse focuses on the core wireless gaming experience, while Pulse Edge adds ANC, a more advanced microphone setup, additional PS5 audio controls and a stronger planar driver configuration.

Launch dates and pricing are still coming

Sony isn’t announcing pricing just yet. The PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset is scheduled to launch in select markets during the 2026 holiday season, while the Pulse Edge Wireless Headset will begin launching in select markets in early 2027.

Sony says preorder information, exact launch dates and pricing will be revealed at a later date. Both headsets will also be showcased at the PlayStation booth during Tokyo Game Show 2026, which begins September 17.

The new lineup gives Sony another way to extend its planar magnetic audio technology beyond the Pulse Elite. The standard Pulse brings the core technology, PlayStation Link and AI-assisted microphone noise rejection into a redesigned headset, while Pulse Edge pushes further with ANC, a detachable boom mic and a more substantial driver configuration.
