Sony is bringing back a piece of its portable audio history with the MDR-3R, a new pair of wired USB-C headphones inspired by the original MDR-3 headphones introduced alongside the first Walkman in 1979. The updated model retains much of the original’s distinctive design while adding modern conveniences, including USB-C connectivity, a built-in microphone, and an in-line remote control.
Announced on November 5, the Sony MDR-3R revisits the headphones that helped define portable music listening nearly five decades ago. Rather than simply recreating the vintage model, Sony has redesigned it for contemporary devices while keeping its lightweight, open-ear construction and recognizable aesthetic.
A familiar Walkman design gets a modern makeover
The MDR-3R carries forward the visual identity of the original MDR-3, including its lightweight construction and open-ear design. Sony is also bringing back the iconic blue and orange ear pads, allowing users to switch between the two colors depending on their preference.

The nostalgic treatment extends beyond the headphones themselves. Sony has recreated elements of the original packaging and instruction manual, giving the new model a design that reflects its Walkman-era heritage.
Underneath the retro exterior, however, the MDR-3R has been updated for modern listening habits. The traditional wired connection has been replaced with USB-C, allowing the headphones to connect directly to compatible smartphones and other devices without requiring Bluetooth pairing or a separate charging process.
USB-C connectivity, microphone, and in-line controls
One of the biggest changes is the switch to USB-C audio. Unlike wireless headphones, the MDR-3R does not require a battery, charging, or Bluetooth pairing. Users can simply connect the cable to a compatible USB-C device and start listening.
The cable also incorporates a built-in microphone for hands-free calls and an in-line remote control for convenient operation.
Sony says the headphones are compatible with devices supporting USB Audio Class 1.0. However, compatibility and functionality may vary depending on the connected device, operating system, and application. Sony also notes that using the MDR-3R with a Walkman is not recommended.
Sony brings back the original 23mm drivers
Sony has also paid attention to the sound experience rather than focusing entirely on nostalgia. The MDR-3R uses re-engineered 23mm driver units based on the original MDR-3 design.
The company says the new drivers are intended to reproduce sound close to the original model while retaining its characteristic sound signature. Sony has also made subtle refinements to suit modern listening preferences, aiming for balanced audio with natural vocals.
The open-ear construction remains part of the experience, preserving another defining characteristic of the original headphones.
Sony MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition
Alongside the standard MDR-3R, Sony is introducing a special Stranger Things Edition inspired by Netflix’s popular series and its 1980s setting.
The limited-edition model features an engraved Stranger Things logo, red and black ear pads, and custom packaging. Its design takes inspiration from Max’s signature headphone style and the mysterious Upside Down.
Unlike the standard model, which comes with blue and orange ear pads, the Stranger Things Edition gets a more distinctive black-and-red appearance.

Sony MDR-3R price and availability
The Sony MDR-3R is available now in the US with a suggested retail price of $59.99. Buyers can find it through Sony, Amazon, Best Buy, and other authorized retailers.
The MDR-3R Stranger Things Edition is priced at $79.99 and is available for preorder through Sony, Netflix, and Amazon.
Both models bring back a recognizable piece of Sony’s audio history, but with a connection designed for today’s USB-C devices. For listeners who prefer wired headphones and appreciate vintage Walkman aesthetics, the MDR-3R offers a different take on the retro audio revival without requiring a return to the technology of 1979.
