If you’ve ever spent countless hours mapping out your global conquests and meticulously planning every move in Sid Meier’s iconic series, then prepare to embark on a whole new kind of campaign. This spring, the Civilization franchise is boldly stepping into the world of virtual reality with the announcement of Civilization VII – VR, a fresh take on strategy gaming designed exclusively for Meta Quest headsets.

Announced by 2K and Firaxis Games, Civilization VII – VR aims to merge the timeless appeal of turn-based strategy with the immersive potential of virtual reality. Available on Quest 3 and Quest 3S, the game is set to redefine what it means to command a civilization—only now, you’re not confined to a flat screen. Instead, you’ll be invited to experience your empire in a three-dimensional space, where your strategic decisions are literally all around you.

The VR adaptation brings with it a “board game-like construction” of gameplay, according to a recent Meta blog post. Picture this: as you don your Quest headset, your living room—or wherever you choose to play—transforms into a dynamic battleground where ancient empires and futuristic societies clash. Thanks to the Quest’s passthrough cameras, the game can project digital maps and pieces right into your physical environment, or you can opt for a more traditional virtual museum setting. Imagine gazing out from a personalized vista, with the panoramic views tailored to the leader you’ve chosen to guide your civilization.

The developers have thoughtfully designed the game with VR comfort in mind. For many VR enthusiasts, extended play sessions can sometimes become a challenge. To address this, Civilization VII – VR is set to run at a slightly sped-up pace by default—helping keep sessions brisk and engaging. But don’t worry; if you prefer a more measured pace reminiscent of classic Civilization gameplay, the settings allow you to adjust the tempo to suit your style.

A standout feature of this VR port is its seamless blend of single-player and multiplayer experiences. In multiplayer mode, you won’t just be sending digital orders into the void; you’ll see your opponents’ chosen leaders gathered around a virtual table, each represented by a distinct digital avatar. This tangible representation of your rivals adds a whole new layer of strategy and interaction, making every game feel like a high-stakes council meeting in a historic hall of power.

For longtime fans of the Civilization series, the promise of VR isn’t just about a new visual format—it’s about reimagining the very essence of what makes Civilization so enduring. Meta’s promotional materials hint at a return to the “true Civ experience,” where you’re not just playing a game, but rather stepping into a role that challenges you to think like a ruler. With the ability to choose from any leader to helm your empire—a change that has already sparked enthusiastic discussion among critics and fans alike—the game promises both familiarity and innovative twists.

What’s next?

While 2K and Firaxis have confirmed the spring release of Civilization VII – VR, details such as pricing and exact release date are still under wraps. For now, fans can feast their eyes on an official trailer that provides a tantalizing glimpse into the game’s world—a blend of classic board game elements and cutting-edge VR environments that promises to transform the way we think about strategy gaming.
