Samsung showed off its latest foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip6 and Fold6, at their big event in July. These phones are supposed to be amazing – faster processors, better cameras (especially for the Flip6), and a sharper design for the Fold6. But here’s the thing: while they sound cool, not as many people pre-ordered them compared to last year’s models.
Maybe it’s the price tag. Both phones are $100 more expensive than their older versions. The Fold6 starts at a whopping $1,899, and the Flip6 isn’t much cheaper at $1,099. Maybe that’s why preorders weren’t quite as crazy this time around.
In South Korea, where Samsung is king, they only got around 910,000 pre-orders for both phones together, as per ZDNet Korea. That’s not bad, but last year they hit 1.02 million for the older Fold and Flip. Still, there is a bright spot. People seem to be more interested in the bigger Fold6 this time around, with more pre-orders than the Flip6.
Samsung thinks things will pick up once the phones are actually out in stores, and they might be right. People who’ve tried them out seem to like them. But with other companies like Xiaomi making their own foldables, Samsung needs to keep things interesting if they want to stay on top. Their big bet seems to be this new Galaxy AI stuff, but will it be enough?
