Samsung‘s upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra has been the center of attention for tech enthusiasts lately, particularly regarding its camera system. There have been conflicting rumors swirling around for the past month, with some suggesting a major change: a downgrade to a triple-camera setup. However, a well-known tech insider has squashed those rumors and revealed some exciting news for photography fans.
According to Ice Universe, a reputable source on Weibo (a popular Chinese social media platform), the Galaxy S25 Ultra will hold onto its quad-camera system but with a significant upgrade to two of the lenses. The ultrawide sensor, currently sitting at 12MP, and the 3x telephoto camera, boasting a mere 10MP, are both in line for a major boost to a whopping 50MP. This is a long-awaited improvement for many, considering these cameras haven’t seen an upgrade since the Galaxy S21 Ultra. The outdated sensors were seen as a weakness in an otherwise impressive camera setup.
This upgrade likely won’t be exclusive to the S25 Ultra. Since the current S24 and S24+ share the same ultrawide and 3x telephoto cameras, it’s safe to assume the entire S25 lineup will benefit from this improvement. The main camera and the 5x periscope lens are rumored to stick with their current resolutions of 200MP and 50MP, respectively.
With all four cameras boasting higher megapixel counts, pixel-binning techniques could play a significant role. Pixel binning combines the data from multiple pixels to create a single, higher-quality image. In theory, this should lead to consistently better low-light performance across all focal lengths on the S25 Ultra.
Zooming between fixed focal lengths can often feel clunky, as phones typically use digital zoom to create the illusion of a smooth zoom experience (with the exception of a few models like the Sony Xperia 1 V). A higher resolution sensor on the 3x telephoto camera could address this issue, offering smoother zooming and potentially improving macro photography capabilities if Samsung allows the lens to focus on closer objects.
While we can expect more rumors of varying credibility to pop up before the official release, this particular leak, if true, will surely be a welcome change for Samsung fans looking for a powerful camera phone.
