The highly anticipated laptops powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X processors are just around the corner, with pre-orders underway and a US release slated for June 18th. However, a recent leak from a Reddit user has cast a shadow of doubt over the performance of the top-of-the-line Snapdragon X Elite chip.

The leak comes from user r/caponica23, who shared benchmark results for the Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge equipped with the Snapdragon X Elite. In a worrying turn of events, the laptop’s single-core performance fell short of the iPhone 12 mini, a phone released in 2020.

On Geekbench, a popular benchmarking tool, the Galaxy Book4 Edge with X Elite scored a meager 1829 in single-core and 11379 in multi-core while running on battery power. Even when plugged in, the performance improvement was negligible, with scores reaching only 1841 in single-core and 11537 in multi-core.

To put this in perspective, the iPhone 12 mini achieves a significantly higher score of 2141 in the single-core test. Additionally, Qualcomm’s own benchmarks advertise a much more impressive showing for the X Elite, claiming scores of 2977 in single-core and a whopping 15086 in multi-core.

It’s important to consider some caveats before jumping to conclusions. Qualcomm has yet to lift the review embargo on X series laptops, meaning official reviews offering a more comprehensive picture are still forthcoming.

Furthermore, the Reddit user’s benchmark results show the X Elite processor not exceeding a clock speed of 2.52 GHz, whereas Qualcomm boasts a boost capability of up to 4.0 GHz. This has led to speculation on Reddit that Samsung might be throttling (limiting) the X Elite in the Book4 Edge to prioritize battery life and thermal management.

However, similar results emerging on Geekbench suggest the issue might be more widespread than just Samsung’s implementation. It’s also possible that the laptops are not running on the final firmware, and a performance boost could come with future updates.
