Samsung’s upcoming One UI 7 update, expected in early 2025, marks a significant shift for Galaxy device users who rely on the DeX app for seamless connectivity with their Windows PCs. In a move that strengthens its collaboration with Microsoft, Samsung is retiring the DeX for Windows app in favor of the Phone Link feature—a part of Microsoft’s Link to Windows initiative. This change, which will take effect with One UI 7, means the classic DeX app for PC will no longer be supported, according to Samsung’s UK website.

The DeX platform, which essentially transformed Samsung phones into desktop-like environments, will still be available, but users will need to shift to the Link to Windows app for a similar experience. This app enables phone-PC integration by allowing users to mirror their phone screens, transfer files, and even access apps directly from the Windows desktop. As Phone Link has evolved, it now incorporates multitasking capabilities that were previously exclusive to DeX.

The decision to phase out DeX on Windows aligns with the growing focus on native integrations that enhance user experience and streamline cross-platform functionality. With Microsoft’s robust support for Android devices through Phone Link, Samsung aims to deliver an improved experience with fewer barriers between phone and PC.
