In a sudden and somewhat surprising move, Qualcomm has discontinued its $899 Snapdragon X Elite Developer Kit, offering full refunds to customers who purchased the mini PC. The company cited that the kit “has not met our usual standards of excellence,” leading to an indefinite pause in both sales and support. This developer kit was originally intended to help developers build and optimize apps for Windows on Arm, a platform known for its power efficiency.
However, the Snapdragon X Elite faced a mixed reception. While it offered great power efficiency — often boasting excellent battery life compared to traditional chips — it struggled to match the performance of desktop processors like Intel’s or even Apple Silicon. In some cases, developers noted that despite pushing the mini PC to higher power limits, they were only able to squeeze out about a 10-30% performance improvement at a significant cost in wattage, with power usage spiking to over 100 watts in tests, far higher than initially expected.
Adding to the frustration, the dev kit’s long shipping delays meant that by the time many developers received their units, retail laptops with Snapdragon chips were already available, reducing the kit’s value as a development tool. This raised questions about whether the dev kit had been rushed or if it simply wasn’t able to keep up with competing technologies.
Despite the abrupt halt, Qualcomm hinted at broader ambitions for Snapdragon in the desktop space. The company has stated that its chips will eventually be available in various PC form factors, including desktops, which could signal future attempts to better compete with Apple and other chipmakers.
For now, customers can expect refunds, but the hope remains that Qualcomm will return with a more powerful and refined device, potentially leveraging the lessons learned from this misstep.
