Proton, the Swiss-based privacy-focused email and service provider, has introduced a new plan tailored for couples. The Proton Duo plan offers the same suite of privacy tools as the company’s flagship Proton Unlimited plan, but with double the users and a slightly adjusted price point.

For those unfamiliar with Proton, the company has built a reputation for offering end-to-end encryption and a strong commitment to user privacy. Their services include encrypted email, secure cloud storage, calendar, password manager, and VPN.

The rationale behind the Duo plan is simple: if one partner is using a privacy-conscious service like Proton, it can be frustrating to have the other relying on less secure alternatives. As Proton’s Anant Vijay points out, sharing sensitive information with a partner who uses Google services can inadvertently expose private data. Proton Duo aims to address this issue by providing a comprehensive privacy package for two people.

What’s included in the Proton Duo plan?

For a monthly fee of $19.99 (or $14.99 for a limited-time offer), Proton Duo subscribers get:

  • Shared storage: A generous 1TB of storage space for the couple to share.
  • Individual accounts: Each partner gets their own encrypted email address, calendar, and access to other Proton services.
  • Privacy features: Both users benefit from Proton’s robust encryption, secure file sharing, and VPN protection.

Compared to purchasing two separate Proton Unlimited plans, the Duo plan offers a significant cost saving. While the individual plan costs $9.99 per month, the Duo plan, even at its regular price, comes in at $9.99 per person.

Is Proton Duo right for you?

The Proton Duo plan is an attractive option for couples who value privacy and want to simplify their digital lives. It offers a convenient and cost-effective way to protect sensitive information for both partners. However, if you have a larger family, Proton’s Family plan might be a better fit.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to choose Proton Duo depends on individual needs and priorities. But for couples seeking a robust privacy solution, Proton’s latest offering is certainly worth considering.
