Picsart, a popular platform for creatives, has announced a partnership with Getty Images to develop a novel AI image generator. This tool aims to revolutionize content creation by offering “responsible, commercially-safe” image generation, directly addressing concerns that have plagued this technology for some time.
Picsart’s AI lab is building a custom model trained exclusively on Getty Images’ vast library of licensed content. This means that paid subscribers to the platform will be able to generate unique images with the full legal backing to use them for commercial purposes. This is a significant step forward, as previous AI image generators have often struggled with the murky waters of copyright ownership.
The launch of Picsart’s AI tool, expected later this year, positions them squarely against Adobe‘s “commercially safe” generator, known as Firefly. Introduced last year, Firefly allows users to create images based on text prompts within Photoshop. Since then, it has been integrated into other popular Adobe Creative Cloud applications. However, there’s a catch. While Adobe’s model trains on its own stock image library (similar to Picsart’s approach with Getty), it also incorporates content that’s openly licensed or out of copyright. This lack of complete control over the training data raises concerns among some users who question the model’s true “commercial safety.”
Getty Images itself is no stranger to AI innovation with a focus on commercial applications. They’ve previously collaborated with companies like Bria AI and Runway on similar projects. Additionally, they have their own “Generative AI by Getty Images” tool, trained on their extensive collection of licensed images and developed in partnership with NVIDIA.
Despite Picsart’s innovative approach, dethroning Adobe’s Firefly might prove challenging. Adobe’s established user base enjoys seamless integration of Firefly within widely used applications like Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom, and even their mobile app, Express. Convincing creatives to switch to Picsart for their AI image generation needs will require a compelling argument beyond just “commercially safe” training data.
The coming months will be interesting to watch as Picsart unveils its AI tool and attempts to carve out a niche in the market. With established players like Adobe already making waves, the competition promises to push the boundaries of AI-powered image creation and empower creatives with even more powerful tools.
