As electronics companies look for the next big thing beyond smartphones, augmented reality glasses are emerging as a promising option for seamless integration of digital information into real-world environments. This week at Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, Chinese tech giant Oppo unveiled their latest prototype – a lightweight pair of glasses called Air Glass 3 that aims to make AR technology practical for everyday use.
Weighing just 50 grams, the Air Glass 3 glasses feature a simplistic design not unlike ordinary eyewear. This is intentional, as Oppo believes glasses are an ideal platform for artificial intelligence applications thanks to their hands-free nature and ability to leverage visual information and voice interactions. The company envisions smart glasses becoming ideal companions to smartphones in the near future.

So what can the Air Glass 3 prototype actually do? Using a wireless connection to an Oppo smartphone, the glasses can overlay digital content and information within the user’s real-world field of vision. This could include things like messages, maps, or other graphics and data.
The glasses are controlled mainly through touch sensors built into the frame, but crucially also feature an onboard voice assistant powered by Oppo’s new large language model called AndesGPT. This chatbot assistant allows users to get information, search topics, plan trips, and complete other tasks simply through verbal commands and conversations. For now, the voice assistant is only available working in Chinese.
The inclusion of an AI-powered assistant aligns with a clear industry trend of electronics brands working to integrate artificial intelligence features into their products. With AI exploding in popularity recently thanks to models like ChatGPT, Oppo and others are hoping to capitalize on this hype and set their devices apart through unique AI capabilities other competitors may lack.
It remains to be seen whether Oppo aims to actually commercialize these Air Glass 3 glasses for public sale. Their last AR glasses prototype never hit the market. But that the company keeps iterating on AR eyewear concepts indicates they see long-term potential.
Oppo isn’t the only tech brand developing augmented reality glasses either. Apple, Meta, and others have showcased various visions for AR, but lightweight all-day wearable glasses seem to be the ultimate goal for the most seamless integration into people’s lives. While the market may start small, one research firm forecasts sales of almost 7 million AR headsets by 2027 – up from just 500,000 last year.
So while still firmly in the prototype stage, Oppo’s Air Glass 3 provides a useful window into the future of augmented reality – one where AI voice assistants float effortlessly all around us as we go about our day. This dream remains years away from mass adoption, but each new innovator like Oppo brings it one step closer to reality.
