OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 debuts—10x more efficient than GPT-4

OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 is here! Smarter writing, less hallucination, but not a frontier model.

It’s a big day for AI nerds and casual ChatGPT fans alike—OpenAI just dropped GPT-4.5, its latest language model, into the wild. The rollout kicks off today as a “research preview” for ChatGPT Pro subscribers, with promises of sharper writing, broader world knowledge, and a personality that’s apparently been polished to feel more… human? But before you get too hyped, OpenAI’s throwing some cold water on the party: GPT-4.5 isn’t the groundbreaking “frontier” model you might’ve been dreaming of. It’s more like a souped-up version of what we’ve already got—impressive, sure, but not a game-changer.

Smarter, smoother, still not “the one”

OpenAI’s calling GPT-4.5 its “most knowledgeable model yet,” which sounds like a flex until you dig into the fine print. It’s got better writing chops, a beefier grasp of the world (think fewer “uh, I dunno” moments), and what the company describes as a “refined personality.” Translation: chatting with GPT-4.5 should feel less like yelling at a robot and more like bantering with a witty friend who’s got a knack for spotting patterns and tying loose ends together. Whether you’re coding, drafting a novel, or just trying to figure out how to fix your leaky faucet, OpenAI says this thing’s got your back.

But here’s the kicker—OpenAI’s quick to clarify that GPT-4.5 isn’t pushing the boundaries of AI innovation. In a leaked document (PDF) that surfaced before the official announcement (and was quietly scrubbed from their site later), the company admitted, “GPT-4.5 is not a frontier model.” It’s a beefy upgrade over GPT-4—boasting more than 10x the computational efficiency—but it’s not flexing the kind of jaw-dropping leaps we’ve seen from models like o1 or the pint-sized o3-mini. In fact, OpenAI says GPT-4.5 falls short of those reasoning-focused releases on most “preparedness evaluations,” whatever that means in plain English. (Probably something about not being ready to take over the world just yet.)

How’d they build this thing?

If you’re curious about the recipe for GPT-4.5, OpenAI’s serving up a mix of old-school tricks and some shiny new techniques. They’ve leaned on supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF)—the same playbook they used for GPT-4o—while tossing in what they call “new supervision techniques.” Word on the street is that OpenAI tapped its o1 model, codenamed Strawberry, to churn out synthetic data for training. The result? A model that’s less prone to making stuff up—or “hallucinating,” in AI-speak—compared to GPT-4o, though it’s still not as tight as o1 on that front.

The image shows two bar charts comparing AI model performance on the SimpleQA benchmark. The left chart displays "SimpleQA accuracy" (higher is better), with GPT-4.5 leading at 62.5%, followed by OpenAI o1 at 47.0%, GPT-4o at 38.6%, and OpenAI o3-mini at 15.0%. The right chart shows "SimpleQA hallucination rate" (lower is better), with GPT-4.5 having the best rate at 37.1%, followed by OpenAI o1 at 44.0%, GPT-4o at 61.0%, and OpenAI o3-mini performing worst at 80.3%. GPT-4.5's bar is highlighted in darker green in both charts, suggesting it offers the best overall performance in this comparison.

“We aligned GPT-4.5 to be a better collaborator,” Raphael Gontijo Lopes, an OpenAI researcher, said during the company’s livestreamed reveal. “Conversations feel warmer, more intuitive, and emotionally nuanced.” To back that up, OpenAI ran it through the wringer with human testers, pitting it against GPT-4o. The verdict? GPT-4.5 smoked its predecessor in pretty much every category—writing, reasoning, you name it.

The image shows a horizontal bar chart titled "Comparative evaluations with human testers" displaying GPT-4.5's win rate versus GPT-4o across three categories. The results show: Professional queries: 63.2% win rate (highest performance) Everyday queries: 57.02% win rate Creative intelligence: 56.83% win rate Each bar includes error margins indicated by small horizontal lines. The x-axis shows the win rate percentage from 0 to 100%, with a dotted vertical line at the 50% mark representing the threshold where GPT-4.5 would outperform GPT-4o. All three categories show GPT-4.5 winning more than half the comparisons, with professional queries showing the strongest advantage. The data is presented on a light gray background with green bars.

It’s big, expensive, and won’t “crush benchmarks”

Don’t expect GPT-4.5 to flex its muscles on leaderboards, though. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO and resident hype-man, took to X to temper expectations: “It’s a giant, expensive model, and it won’t crush benchmarks.” That’s a refreshingly honest take from a guy who’s usually all about the big swings. Translation: GPT-4.5 is a heavy hitter, but it’s not swinging for the fences—it’s more about refining what’s already on the table.

And speaking of the table, who gets to eat first? ChatGPT Pro users are in the front of the line with today’s research preview. Next week, it rolls out to Plus and Team subscribers, with Enterprise and Edu folks getting their shot soon after. Oh, and if you’re a Microsoft fan, GPT-4.5 is already live on Azure’s AI Foundry platform, alongside fresh drops from Stability, Cohere, and Microsoft itself.

Where’s GPT-5?

While GPT-4.5 is stealing the spotlight today, the real buzz is still swirling around GPT-5—and OpenAI’s not exactly quieting the chatter. Altman’s teased GPT-5 as a “system that integrates a lot of our technology,” including the shiny new o3 reasoning model that got a sneak peek during OpenAI’s “12 Days of Christmas” stunt in December. Last month, we got o3-mini, a lightweight taste of their reasoning tech, but the full o3 is being saved for GPT-5’s grand entrance.

Why the slow burn? OpenAI’s chasing the holy grail: artificial general intelligence (AGI), the kind of AI that doesn’t just parrot answers but actually thinks like a human—or better. GPT-4.5 might not be the frontier model to get us there, but it’s a hefty stepping stone, bulking up the computational muscle and smoothing out the kinks for whatever comes next.

Look, GPT-4.5 isn’t here to reinvent the wheel—it’s here to make the wheel spin smoother, faster, and with a little more style. For writers, coders, and everyday folks who lean on ChatGPT to get stuff done, that’s a win. But for those of us watching the AI race like it’s the Super Bowl, it’s a reminder that the real fireworks are still ahead. GPT-5, with its o3 brain and AGI ambitions, is the one to watch.

For now, GPT-4.5 is OpenAI saying, “We’ve got something solid—enjoy it while we cook up the next big thing.” And honestly? That’s plenty to chew on. Whether it’s drafting your next pitch or just keeping you company while you doomscroll, GPT-4.5 sounds like a trusty sidekick—just don’t ask it to save the world. Yet.
