OnePlus has found itself in hot water lately over false claims it made about the storage capabilities of its recently launched OnePlus 12R smartphone. The company is now trying to make amends by offering full refunds to disappointed buyers.

The controversy stems from OnePlus originally advertising that the 12R would come equipped with cutting-edge UFS 4.0 storage technology on the 256GB model. This super-fast flash storage standard would have given the phone a real performance boost.

However, it was soon discovered through independent benchmark tests that the 12R actually only uses the older UFS 3.1 standard, even on the highest storage tier device. OnePlus was forced to confirm that it had misled consumers about the 12R’s capabilities.

Understandably, many early adopters now feel duped after paying a premium price for a phone they thought contained the latest tech. The false marketing claims also cast doubt on other aspects of the 12R, including the vaunted Trinity performance optimization engine.

In an effort to rebuild trust and satisfy disgruntled buyers, OnePlus has now announced that anyone who purchased a 12R can obtain a full refund if they return the phone by March 16, 2024. The company says its customer service team has been informed of the situation and will smoothly facilitate refunds.

While a commendable move, this corrective action from OnePlus was necessary after such a glaring falsehood. The misleading UFS 4.0 storage claims were a key part of the phone’s advertised appeal and initial hype. Some analysts think the company may have sacrificed long-term credibility for short-term launch day buzz.

For any 12R customers still hoping to keep their new phone, OnePlus insists that it still delivers great performance and value through the Trinity engine optimization and other features. But those feeling deceived by the storage deception now have a way out through the refund program.

After this PR misstep, OnePlus will certainly need to work diligently to win back consumer trust. The 12R refund offer is a start, but the company may find itself facing more scrutiny about its performance claims for future devices. For now, early adopters have to decide if they still believe in the OnePlus hype machine.
