Notion finally added a proper high contrast mode in late July 2026, and if you’ve ever squinted at its famously muted design, you’ll know this is a long-overdue accessibility win. The feature went live on desktop and web on July 30, 2026, and is designed specifically for people who need stronger contrast between text, icons, and borders to read comfortably.

For years, Notion users with low vision, contrast sensitivity issues, or certain types of color blindness have struggled with the app’s soft, low-contrast interface. Even in dark mode, a lot of elements – especially secondary text and borders – can feel washed out.

Notion itself acknowledged this in its announcement, saying the company built high contrast mode “for anyone who needs more contrast” because the standard muted design can make content hard to read. That’s a meaningful shift for a tool that’s become a daily workspace for millions of writers, students, and teams.

How to enable high contrast mode in Notion

Turning on high contrast mode is straightforward once you know where to look.

On desktop (Mac, Windows, Linux)

  1. Open Notion on your computer.
  2. Click Settings in the left sidebar.
  3. Go to Preferences.
  4. Open Appearance.
  5. Turn on High contrast mode.

That’s it. The change applies immediately across your workspace: text gets bolder, icons become more distinct, and borders stand out more clearly.

On the web

The steps are identical on Notion’s web app:

  1. Open Notion in your browser.
  2. Click Settings in the left sidebar.
  3. Navigate to Preferences → Appearance.
  4. Enable High contrast mode.

Notion has confirmed that high contrast mode works independently of your light/dark mode setting, so you can combine it with whichever theme you prefer.

On mobile (iOS and Android)

As of the July 30 rollout, Notion has only officially listed high contrast mode for desktop and web. Mobile support may arrive in a future update, but it isn’t part of the initial release. If you’re on mobile right now, you’ll still have access to standard light and dark modes, plus system-wide accessibility features on your phone or tablet.

What high contrast mode actually changes

High contrast mode isn’t just “dark mode but darker.” It specifically targets contrast ratios across the interface:

  • Text: Primary and secondary text become more distinct against the background.
  • Icons: UI icons gain stronger outlines or fill, making them easier to spot.
  • Borders and dividers: Lines between sections, tables, and blocks are more visible.

This is especially helpful in dense pages with lots of toggles, databases, and nested blocks – the kind of pages many power users live in.

Where this fits in Notion’s accessibility push

High contrast mode is part of a broader, if belated, accessibility push from Notion. In August 2025, the company rolled out features like a “Skip to Content” button to bypass navigation menus and a dedicated keyboard shortcuts dialog for faster access to commands.

Even before that, users had been asking for better contrast and accessibility options for years. Reddit threads from as far back as 2022 show people requesting a high-contrast mode and workarounds like zooming in just to make text more legible. The July 2026 update finally addresses that core request at the system level instead of relying on hacks.

Tips for using high contrast mode effectively

  • Combine with your preferred theme: Since high contrast works alongside light or dark mode, experiment with both to see which feels easiest on your eyes over long sessions.
  • Adjust system settings too: On macOS and Windows, you can also enable system-wide high contrast or increased contrast options, which can complement Notion’s setting.
  • Use keyboard shortcuts: If you frequently switch between writing and reviewing, pair high contrast with Notion’s shortcuts (like Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + L for toggling dark mode) to fine-tune your environment quickly.

Who should consider turning it on

You don’t need a formal vision diagnosis to benefit from higher contrast. High contrast mode can help if you:

  • Find yourself leaning closer to the screen after an hour of writing.
  • Struggle to distinguish secondary text or subtle UI elements.
  • Work in bright environments or with glare-prone screens.
  • Simply prefer a sharper, more defined interface.

It’s one of those settings that many people will try once and then leave on without thinking twice.

What’s next for accessibility in Notion

Notion’s recent focus on accessibility suggests more improvements could be on the way. With enterprise admins now tracking AI usage and the platform adding more advanced automation and agent features, it’s reasonable to expect continued investment in making the core experience usable for everyone.

For now, if you’re on desktop or the web, the most impactful move is simple: flip on high contrast mode and see how your everyday pages feel.
