Nintendo has finally lifted the veil on the much-anticipated successor to the wildly successful Nintendo Switch, dubbing it the Nintendo Switch 2. With a video reveal that hit the internet on Thursday, Nintendo has begun to outline what fans can expect from this next-gen console, although a precise launch date remains elusive, with only a vague “2025” as the timeline.

Design and features

At first glance, the Switch 2 retains the familiar silhouette of its predecessor but with noticeable enhancements. It’s larger, suggesting perhaps a bigger screen or improved ergonomics. The Joy-Con controllers have undergone a slight redesign; they’re now in black with vibrant color accents and attach to the console’s sides, possibly using magnets as suggested by earlier leaks. A new button under the home button on the right Joy-Con adds to the intrigue — its purpose is yet to be disclosed. Additionally, these Joy-Cons seem capable of functioning somewhat like a mouse, potentially enhancing gameplay interaction. The SL and SR buttons are also larger, indicating perhaps more significant input roles in games.

On the hardware side, the Switch 2 includes a new USB-C port alongside the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack, suggesting enhanced connectivity options. The kickstand, often critiqued on the original model for its flimsiness, now sports a more robust U-shaped design. The console’s dock has been given a more rounded aesthetic, continuing Nintendo’s tradition of user-friendly design changes.

Gaming experience

The reveal video teased a new “Mario Kart” title, which could be a significant launch title if history is any guide. But perhaps more reassuring for fans is the confirmation of backward compatibility. Nintendo has promised that both physical and digital games from the original Switch will be playable on the Switch 2, although they’ve added a caveat about potential incompatibilities with some titles. This commitment to backward compatibility is a testament to Nintendo’s understanding of its audience’s investment in their game libraries.

Events and further information

For those eager to get hands-on with the console, Nintendo is planning “Switch 2 Experience” events in cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas in April. Tickets for these events will be available starting January 17th at 12 pm PT / 3 pm ET, offering fans a chance to experience the new hardware firsthand. Moreover, a Nintendo Direct specifically for the Switch 2 is scheduled for April 2nd, 2025, where presumably more details on specifications, games, and perhaps the exact release date will be shared.

Legacy of the Switch

The original Switch has set a high bar, not just in sales but in the hearts of gamers worldwide. With sales figures surpassing 146 million units, it stands as one of Nintendo’s greatest commercial successes, only behind the DS in terms of units sold. The Switch’s success was fueled by groundbreaking titles like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” “Super Mario Odyssey,” and “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe,” all of which will be playable on the new console.
