Motorola announced a major shift in its smartphone strategy this week at Mobile World Congress 2024. The company revealed an expanded partnership with Corning Incorporated to bring Gorilla Glass, Corning’s renowned durable cover glass, to all Motorola smartphones released in the second half of 2024 and beyond.
With this move, Motorola cements its commitment to utilizing premier materials and technologies across its device portfolio. No longer reserved for only high-end offerings, Gorilla Glass will become standard on Motorola phones at all price points. This will allow more consumers access to the improved scratch resistance and superior drop protection Gorilla Glass provides.
Gorilla Glass has become an industry leader for smartphone cover glass due to its optimal balance of optical clarity, touch sensitivity, scratch resistance, and impact protection. Corning produces Gorilla Glass through a specialized ion-exchange process, giving the material significantly enhanced durability compared to traditional aluminosilicate glass.
Motorola’s parent company, Lenovo, currently uses Gorilla Glass on select laptops and tablets. This expanded partnership builds on that existing relationship by bringing Gorilla Glass into Motorola’s sphere. The move aligns with Motorola’s continued emphasis on seamless connectivity and integration with Lenovo devices.
The announcement came amongst several other revelations from Motorola at Mobile World Congress 2024. The company showcased an armband-style concept smartphone that can wrap around the user’s wrist when not in use. Additionally, Motorola and Lenovo jointly unveiled Smart Connect – a suite of features enabling automatic connectivity, content sharing, and control syncing between phones, tablets and laptops across both brands.
