Microsoft today unveiled its plan to make Windows 11 more inclusive and accessible. The tech giant announced that Windows 11 will soon support hearing aids, allowing users to seamlessly take calls, enjoy music, and stream audio directly from their PCs.

This feature was introduced in the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 25977, which is currently available for testing. The key innovation here is the support for hearing aids equipped with Bluetooth LE Audio technology, which enables users to pair their hearing aids with Windows 11 PCs.

However, it’s essential to note that this feature is currently limited to select Windows devices that support Bluetooth LE Audio. Microsoft, however, has assured users that this support will be extended to more PCs in the future. Moreover, Microsoft is committed to enhancing the capabilities of this feature over time, including the ability to control audio presets within the Windows environment.

Microsoft initially announced its plan to introduce Bluetooth LE support in Windows 11 during its Build conference in May. This audio specification incorporates the LC3 audio codec, ensuring high-quality audio while conserving battery power. It also allows for exciting functionalities, such as simultaneous audio transmission to multiple devices.

In addition to this exciting accessibility update, the latest Build 25977 for Windows 11 also introduces some important privacy enhancements. Microsoft users will now receive notifications when an app attempts to access their location or Wi-Fi information, bolstering data security.

The move to incorporate support for hearing aids in Windows 11 is part of a broader trend in the tech industry. Major companies like Sony have already delved into the hearing tech space, collaborating with WS Audiology to launch self-fitting hearing aids. There are even reports that Apple might explore positioning its AirPods as hearing aids. As hearing aids become more readily available over the counter, it’s expected that more major players will enter this expanding market.
