Microsoft launches Surface Pro 12-inch with Snapdragon X Plus chip

Microsoft’s $799 Surface Pro 12-inch ditches the Surface Connect port and Alcantara palm rests, offering a sleek, AI-enhanced tablet with a 90Hz display.

Microsoft’s Surface lineup has always been about blending the best of tablets and laptops, and their latest offering, the Surface Pro 12-inch, takes that mission to a new level. Announced yesterday, this sleek, Arm-powered device is a bold reimagining of the compact tablet, drawing inspiration from the pint-sized Surface Go while addressing its shortcomings with smarter design choices. Starting at $799, it’s a fan-less, USB-C-only machine with a fresh keyboard setup and a modernized chassis that feels like a big step forward.

The Surface Pro 12-inch isn’t just a shrunken version of its 13-inch sibling, the Surface Pro 11. Microsoft has clearly learned from the Surface Go, a 10.5-inch tablet that, while charming, often felt underpowered and cramped. This time, the company is aiming for a sweet spot: a 12-inch LCD display with a 2196 x 1464 resolution (220 ppi) and a 90Hz refresh rate. It’s not the 120Hz OLED panel you’ll find on the larger Surface Pro 11, but it’s a solid compromise for a device meant to be ultra-portable. The 3:2 aspect ratio, a Surface hallmark, remains, making it ideal for productivity tasks like document editing or note-taking.

What’s striking is how Microsoft has overhauled the design to make this smaller Surface feel premium. Gone are the cooling vents found on the bigger model, thanks to the fan-less Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus 8-core chip. This allows for a rounded, smoother chassis that’s more comfortable to hold and, frankly, looks a lot sleeker. This design shift makes the Surface Pro 12-inch feel “a lot nicer” than its 13-inch counterpart, and early hands-on reports suggest it’s a noticeable upgrade in hand feel.

At $799, the Surface Pro 12-inch comes with 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and the aforementioned Snapdragon X Plus chip. This 8-core processor, a slightly trimmed-down version of the 10-core X Plus found in pricier devices, is part of Qualcomm’s push to make Arm-based laptops more affordable. It should deliver around 12 hours of battery life during active web usage—impressive for a device this compact (or up to 16 hours of video playback). For those needing more storage, a 512GB model is available for $899.

The catch? The keyboard, a staple of the Surface experience, isn’t included. You’ll need to shell out an extra $149.99 for the new Surface keyboard, which has been redesigned specifically for this 12-inch form factor. Older Type Covers won’t fit, and Microsoft has taken the opportunity to rethink how the keyboard connects. It still attaches magnetically, but a new connector means it lies flat rather than angled, which could make typing feel a bit different. The palm rests have ditched the Alcantara fabric for a smooth matte finish, while the back keeps the soft, colorful Alcantara in slate, violet, or ocean green.

The Surface Pen, another optional accessory, also gets a new home. Instead of slotting into the keyboard, it now attaches to the back of the tablet, where it charges and, per Microsoft, stays secure even when tossed into a bag. This change reflects Microsoft’s focus on streamlining the design while keeping the pen-and-ink experience intact for artists and note-takers.

One of the biggest shifts is the death of the Surface Connect port, a proprietary charging solution that’s been a fixture of the Surface lineup. The Surface Pro 12-inch goes all-in on USB-C, offering two USB-C 3.2 ports for charging, data transfers, and DisplayPort 1.4a support (capable of driving two 4K monitors at 60Hz). This move aligns Microsoft with the broader industry trend toward USB-C universality, making the Surface Pro 12-inch more compatible with modern accessories but potentially frustrating for longtime Surface users with legacy docks.

The camera setup has also been tweaked. The front-facing camera is a 1080p unit, a step down from the 1440p sensor on the Surface Pro 11, but still perfectly fine for video calls. The 10-megapixel rear camera, meanwhile, has been repositioned for easier portrait-mode photos or videos—a niche use case for a tablet, but a thoughtful touch nonetheless.

Like other Snapdragon X-powered devices, the Surface Pro 12-inch is a Copilot Plus PC, meaning it’s built to take advantage of Microsoft’s AI-driven features in Windows 11. The standout is Recall, a tool that lets you search through a visual history of your activity—like a supercharged screenshot tool that remembers everything. Other AI goodies include enhanced Windows search, Click to Do (which suggests actions based on what’s on your screen), and various productivity boosts. These features are part of Microsoft’s broader push to integrate AI into everyday computing, and the Snapdragon chip’s neural processing unit (NPU) ensures they run smoothly.

The Surface Pro 12-inch arrives at a time when the tablet market is both crowded and stagnant. Apple’s iPad dominates, but its focus on media consumption and creative workflows leaves room for devices like the Surface, which prioritize productivity and versatility. At $799, the Surface Pro 12-inch undercuts the base-model iPad Pro 11-inch (which starts at $999 without a keyboard) while offering a full Windows 11 experience. It’s also a compelling alternative to budget laptops, especially for students or professionals who value portability and pen input.

Microsoft’s decision to go fan-less and USB-C-only signals confidence in Arm-based computing, which has matured significantly since the early days of Windows on Arm. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series is closing the performance gap with Intel and AMD chips, and the Surface Pro 12-inch benefits from that progress. The fan-less design also means a quieter, cooler device—perfect for long study sessions or coffee shop work.

Still, there are trade-offs. The lack of an OLED display option and the 90Hz refresh rate might disappoint those chasing the buttery-smooth visuals of pricier tablets. The separate keyboard purchase stings, especially since it’s non-negotiable for the full Surface experience. And while the Snapdragon X Plus is efficient, it’s not as powerful as the chips in higher-end Surfaces or laptops, which could limit its appeal for heavy multitasking or creative workloads like video editing.

The Surface Pro 12-inch feels like Microsoft doubling down on its vision for the Surface brand: devices that blur the line between tablet and laptop, with a focus on portability, pen input, and Windows’ unmatched software ecosystem. It’s a direct response to the Surface Go’s mixed reception, offering more power, a better display, and a refined design while keeping costs down. It’s also a sign of Microsoft’s commitment to Arm, which could pave the way for even more efficient and affordable Windows devices in the future.

Preorders are live now at Microsoft’s store, Amazon, and Best Buy, with consumer shipping starting May 20th and business availability on July 22nd. If you’re in the market for a compact, versatile Windows tablet that doesn’t skimp on style or functionality, the Surface Pro 12-inch is worth a look. It’s not perfect, but it’s a thoughtful evolution of the Surface formula—and a reminder that Microsoft’s still got some tricks up its sleeve.
