Microsoft has unveiled a new challenger in the laptop market: the Surface Laptop, powered by Arm processors from Qualcomm. This consumer-focused device sets its sights on Apple’s MacBook lineup, boasting extended battery life, improved performance, and a feature set geared towards AI-powered productivity.
Available for preorder starting at $999.99, the Surface Laptop directly competes with the MacBook Air. Both the 13.8-inch and 15-inch models come with a starting configuration of 16GB of RAM (a clear advantage over the base MacBook Air) and 256GB of storage. Storage options expand to a whopping 1TB SSD, and memory can be configured up to a hefty 32GB, with an exclusive 64GB option available during the preorder period.
The core of this new Surface Laptop lies in its Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite or Plus chip. This Arm-based processor promises significant performance gains, with Microsoft claiming an 80% improvement over the previous generation. More importantly, it targets extended battery life, boasting up to 22 hours of local video playback on a single charge – a major advantage for users on the go.
The Surface Laptop features a beautiful display with slimmer bezels and rounded corners compared to its predecessor. Both sizes offer a 120Hz variable refresh rate touchscreen with Dolby Vision IQ support, making visuals smooth and vibrant. The 13.8-inch model boasts a 2304 x 1536 resolution, while the 15-inch jumps to 2496 x 1664.

The Surface Laptop comes equipped with two USB-C ports, a legacy USB-A 3.1 port, and a 1080p camera for video conferencing. It also features a 3.5mm headphone jack and supports fast charging with a 65-watt power supply (included with the 15-inch model). The 13.8-inch version comes with a slightly less powerful 39-watt charger.
One key feature missing from the MacBook Air is the haptic touchpad, which Microsoft has included in this Surface Laptop. Additionally, Microsoft boasts that the Surface Laptop can power up to three external 4K monitors alongside its own display, offering significant multitasking capabilities.
Microsoft is heavily promoting the Surface Laptop as a “Copilot Plus PCs.” This designation highlights the presence of a neural processing unit (NPU) that empowers Windows 11 AI features. Features like “Recall,” an on-device search for information across apps, documents, and folders, leverage this NPU for a faster and more efficient user experience.
Microsoft even showcased live translation of three languages during a video call, highlighting another AI-powered feature accessible through Copilot Plus. The company claims that Copilot Plus PCs will receive Windows AI features before their Intel counterparts.
While it remains to be seen if the Surface Laptop can fully match or surpass Apple’s custom-designed M-series chips, it presents a compelling alternative. The combination of impressive battery life, strong performance claims from the Arm processor, and a feature set focused on AI-powered productivity makes it a serious contender in the consumer laptop market.
The starting price of $999 for the 13.8-inch model positions it competitively against the MacBook Air. Preorders are open now and shipping starts June 18th.
