In response to user backlash, Microsoft is reversing a recent change that introduced an irritating feature to its OneDrive sync client. Users will no longer be interrogated about their reasons for closing the app on their PCs. These prompts appeared when users disabled features like folder backup, and a recent addition included pop-up questioning users when they closed the app.
In this new pop-up, users were required to select a reason for quitting the app from a dropdown menu before being allowed to exit. The options included explanations such as “I don’t use OneDrive” or “I don’t want OneDrive running all the time.”

Unsurprisingly, users were not pleased with this added inconvenience, and Microsoft has now decided to remove the dialog altogether. The company clarified that this was merely an experiment conducted on a small subset of users between November 1 and 8.
A Microsoft spokesperson shared in a statement with The Verge, “Between Nov. 1 and 8, a small subset of consumer OneDrive users were presented with a dialog box when closing the OneDrive sync client, asking for feedback on the reason they chose to close the application. This type of user feedback helps inform our ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of our products.”
While occasional user feedback requests may be acceptable, intrusive pop-ups like these can be disruptive and understandably angered users. Microsoft has already faced criticism for being pushy with advertisements for its cloud services on Windows 11. It remains to be seen if the company will take this user reaction into account for future developments.
