Meta’s Threads text-based social media platform has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 150 million monthly active users. This marks a notable increase from the 130 million users reported in February.
During Meta’s Q1 2024 earnings call on April 24, 2024 [PDF], CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed satisfaction with Threads’ growth, stating that it is progressing as anticipated. Originally conceptualized as a potential competitor to Twitter by the Instagram team, Threads garnered 100 million users within just five days of its launch in select markets in July, outpacing the rapid growth of OpenAI.
Initially launched with basic features, Threads has recently introduced trending topics in the US to enhance its competitiveness with platforms like Twitter (now X). The addition of Fediverse sharing in beta allows users to share posts on other networks utilizing the decentralized ActivityPub protocol, such as Mastodon. Furthermore, a Threads public API is expected to be released in June.
Adam Mosserri, the head of Instagram, unveiled a new feature called Hidden Words, enabling Threads users to conceal specific words and phrases on the platform, along with unwanted replies. Additionally, the team is testing new functionalities that empower users to control who can quote their posts and mute notifications.
