Meta Platforms is reportedly in advanced negotiations to license the voices of several Hollywood A-list celebrities for its upcoming artificial intelligence initiatives. According to Bloomberg, the company is offering substantial financial incentives to secure the vocal talents of individuals including Awkwafina, Judi Dench, and Keegan-Michael Key.

The acquired voice rights are intended for an AI-powered service, akin to Siri or Google Assistant, which is slated for a public unveiling at Meta Connect next month. The project represents a significant investment in AI technology and a strategic move to differentiate Meta’s offerings in the burgeoning digital assistant market.

However, the negotiations have been complex, with talent agencies expressing concerns over the scope and duration of the proposed voice licenses. While Meta seeks extended rights for specific projects, representatives for the celebrities are advocating for more restrictive terms.

This high-profile endeavor comes on the heels of Meta’s decision to discontinue its celebrity-inspired chatbot project. The company’s pivot towards AI voice technology indicates a strategic shift in its AI development priorities.

The acquisition of celebrity voices for AI training has become a contentious issue, particularly in light of recent industry labor disputes. Meta’s approach to offering substantial financial compensation differs from other industry practices and may influence future negotiations.

As the tech industry accelerates its investment in AI, the competition for talent and intellectual property is intensifying. Meta’s pursuit of celebrity voice rights represents a bold strategy to gain a competitive edge in the evolving AI landscape.

The success of this venture will depend on a variety of factors, including the technical capabilities of the AI system, the public’s acceptance of celebrity-voiced assistants, and the company’s ability to manage the complexities of intellectual property rights.
