Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has offered his assessment of Apple’s newly unveiled Vision Pro headset, comparing it to Meta’s latest offering, the Quest 3. In a video posted to his Instagram account on Tuesday, Zuckerberg provided his verdict on the two devices, stating unequivocally that he believes the Quest 3 is the superior product.
“I don’t just think that Quest is the better value, I think Quest is the better product, period,” Zuckerberg declared while being filmed using the Quest 3’s video passthrough system in his living room.
Zuckerberg highlighted the trade-offs Apple made to achieve the Vision Pro’s high-end display in a wearable form factor. He pointed out that the Quest 3 weighs 120 grams less than the Vision Pro, making it more comfortable to wear for extended periods. He also noted that the Quest 3 allows for greater motion due to its lack of a wired battery pack and offers a wider field of view.
Zuckerberg praised the Quest 3’s use of physical hand controllers and hand tracking for input, though he acknowledged the merits of eye tracking for certain use cases, hinting that the feature will return in future Meta headsets after its debut in the Quest Pro. He also claimed that the Quest has a more robust “immersive” content library than Apple, which, while technically true at present, may change as Apple’s ecosystem evolves.
Notably, Zuckerberg conceded that the Vision Pro is a better device for entertainment purposes. However, he emphasized that the Quest 3 is “like seven times less expensive” than Apple’s offering.
Toward the end of the video, Zuckerberg expressed gratitude to his team, which has been developing virtual reality headsets for an extended period, conveying a sense of reassurance and confidence. As recently discussed with Zuckerberg, Meta undoubtedly has a significant head start and will likely remain the uncontested leader in headset sales for the time being. A strong argument can be made, as Zuckerberg does, that the Quest 3 is currently a better headset for most people than the Vision Pro.
However, Zuckerberg’s assessment fails to acknowledge Apple’s obvious hardware and developer ecosystem advantages, the latter of which will take time to evolve in a new product category like this. While Meta may be breathing a sigh of relief at the moment, the headset wars are just beginning, and this is a game of endurance. The battle between these tech giants is far from over.
