It’s June 5th, you’ve just snagged a shiny new Nintendo Switch 2, and you’re ready to dive into something fresh, fast, and unmistakably Nintendo. Well, buckle up, because Mario Kart World is screeching onto the scene as a day-one exclusive for the Switch 2, and it’s shaping up to be the wildest ride in the franchise yet. Nintendo dropped the news during their latest Nintendo Direct, and let me tell you, it’s got fans buzzing like a blue shell on the final lap.

If you’ve been keeping tabs on Nintendo’s next-gen console since its tease back in January, you probably caught that Mario Kart was the one game they couldn’t resist hinting at. Now we’ve got the full scoop: Mario Kart World isn’t just another lap around the track—it’s a full-on evolution. Think open-world chaos, races with up to 24 drivers, and a price tag that’ll make you double-take at $79.99. Yeah, it’s steep for a Mario Kart game, but Nintendo’s sweetening the deal with a $499.99 Switch 2 bundle that tosses in a download code for the game. Considering the standalone console runs $449.99, that’s a tidy $50 bonus for early adopters. Mark your calendars, because this all drops on June 5th, and Nintendo’s promising more juicy details in a Direct set for April 17th at 6 am PT / 9 am ET.

So, what’s got everyone so hyped? For starters, Mario Kart World is tossing the rulebook out the window with an open-world mode called “Free Roam.” Imagine Forza Horizon 5, but instead of sleek supercars, you’re tearing through Mushroom Kingdom backroads in a kart, a boat, or even a snowmobile. Nintendo says you can “take scenic drives with friends” or snap photos at iconic spots—because who doesn’t want a selfie with Mario and a Moo Moo Meadows cow? Then there’s “Knock-out Tour,” a checkpoint-charged, cross-country race that’s giving off serious Cannonball Run vibes. It’s less about perfect drifts and more about full-throttle mayhem.

The gameplay footage Nintendo showed off was a feast for the eyes. You’ve got karts grinding rails and power lines like they’re auditioning for a Tony Hawk game, wall jumps that’d make a platformer jealous, and dynamic weather that switches up the vibe depending on the time of day. Rain-soaked tracks at dusk? Snowy drifts under a midday sun? It’s all in play, and it’s looking gorgeous. They even teased on-the-fly character customization—think swapping Mario’s hat mid-race or giving Wario a flashier mustache on a whim.

Speaking of characters, the trailer brought out the usual suspects—Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser—but also threw in some curveballs. That cow from Moo Moo Meadows, a staple of Mario Kart 64’s background, is finally hopping into a kart. It’s the kind of quirky addition that reminds you Nintendo’s not afraid to lean into the weird, and I’m here for it.

Let’s be real: Mario Kart isn’t just a game—it’s a cultural juggernaut. When Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 back in January, they knew dangling a new Mario Kart would get pulses racing. The series has been a console-seller for decades. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still the Switch’s reigning champ with over 60 million copies sold, while Mario Kart 7 topped the 3DS charts. Go back further, and Mario Kart Wii trailed only Wii Sports on its platform, and Mario Kart DS sat pretty in the DS’s top three. Even the Wii U, bless its underdog heart, owes much of its legacy to Mario Kart 8. Point is, if there’s one franchise Nintendo can bank on to launch a console, it’s this one.

What’s Next?

With the Switch 2’s June 5th launch creeping closer, Mario Kart World is poised to be the killer app that gets folks in line—or at least refreshing their online carts. That $79.99 price might raise some eyebrows (it’s a jump from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s $59.99 launch), but if the open-world scope and 24-player races deliver, it could be worth every penny. And for those eyeing the bundle, it’s a no-brainer way to kick off the Switch 2 era.

Nintendo’s keeping some cards close to the chest—expect that April 17th Direct to unpack more about tracks, online play, and maybe a few more surprise racers. For now, though, Mario Kart World is shaping up to be the chaotic, colorful blast we’ve all been craving. Whether you’re a casual Sunday driver or a Rainbow Road pro, this one’s got something for you. See you at the starting line.
