Is IO Interactive's fantasy RPG headed exclusively to Xbox?
SHARE

In a surprising twist, internal Microsoft documents submitted as evidence during the ongoing FTC vs. Microsoft trial shed light on a potential collaboration between Xbox and IO Interactive, the renowned developer behind the Hitman series. The documents suggest that IO Interactive’s upcoming online fantasy RPG, tentatively named “Project Dragon,” may be an Xbox exclusive. While specific details remain scarce, the implications of this collaboration have sparked speculation within the gaming community.

Among the confidential documents revealed in the FTC vs. Microsoft trial, an Xbox research report unveiled the company’s exploration of various acquisition opportunities, with IO Interactive listed prominently among them. This inclusion strongly suggests that Microsoft has been eyeing IO Interactive as a potential addition to its roster of game development studios. The document also reveals IOI’s involvement in an intriguing project named “Project Dragon,” described as an RPG shooter intended for release on both PC and Xbox Series X and S consoles.

The leaked information aligns with an earlier report from Windows Central, which unveiled “Project Dragon” as an Xbox-exclusive fantasy RPG. Although no official confirmation has linked “Project Dragon” to IO Interactive’s previously announced fantasy RPG, it seems highly unlikely that the studio would simultaneously undertake two fantasy RPGs alongside their ongoing development of a James Bond game. The internal Microsoft document strengthens the case for collaboration between IO Interactive and Xbox, suggesting that the upcoming fantasy RPG will be an Xbox and PC-exclusive, published by Xbox Game Studios, and backed by substantial Xbox support. However, it’s important to note that this information was shared internally within Microsoft in May of 2021 and plans may have evolved since then.

While details regarding IO Interactive’s fantasy RPG remain shrouded in secrecy, the studio has hinted at its inspiration from gamebooks such as Fighting Fantasy. This departure from their renowned Hitman franchise showcases the studio’s ambition to explore new horizons and expand its creative boundaries. With a rich history of creating immersive and narrative-driven experiences, IO Interactive’s venture into the fantasy RPG genre holds great promise.

If the speculation surrounding the Xbox exclusivity of IO Interactive’s fantasy RPG holds true, it would mark a significant coup for Xbox Game Studios. The collaboration would not only bolster the Xbox ecosystem but also strengthen Microsoft’s position in the console war against competitors like Sony‘s PlayStation. Furthermore, IO Interactive’s partnership with Xbox could bring forth innovative gameplay mechanics, captivating storytelling, and an enticing new world for players to explore.
