Setting up a new WordPress website can be surprisingly straightforward when your hosting provider handles most of the server configuration for you. Kinsta is built around managed WordPress hosting, and its MyKinsta dashboard lets you create a new site without manually configuring a web server, PHP, database, or WordPress installation.
The process starts in the MyKinsta dashboard, where you can choose to install a fresh WordPress site, create an empty environment for a custom setup, or clone an existing Kinsta environment.
Here’s how to create a new WordPress site on Kinsta and what each option means.
Start by adding a new site in MyKinsta
After signing in to your Kinsta account, open the Sites section in MyKinsta. Click “Add site” and then select “Create new site.”
Kinsta will ask what kind of environment you want to create. You’ll see three choices: Install WordPress, Empty environment, and Clone.
For a typical new WordPress website, choose “Install WordPress.” This gives you a ready-to-use WordPress installation without requiring you to install the software yourself.
The Empty environment option is intended for more specialized setups. It provides the software needed to run a WordPress site, including the web server, PHP and MySQL, but does not install WordPress. This can be useful when migrating a site with tools such as Duplicator or setting up a custom Bedrock/Trellis installation.
The Clone option is different again. It lets you create a copy of an existing live or staging environment on Kinsta, which can be useful when you want to duplicate an existing site rather than start from scratch.
Choose your site name and data center
If you select “Install WordPress,” the next step is to configure the new installation.
Start with the site name. This is primarily an internal name that appears in MyKinsta, so visitors won’t see it as the public name of your website. Kinsta also uses it as the first part of the temporary Kinsta domain assigned to the site.
Next, choose a data center location.
This choice is worth paying attention to because the data center determines where your site’s data is stored and served from. Kinsta recommends choosing a location close to your primary audience because geographical proximity can help reduce latency, time to first byte (TTFB), and page load times. Kinsta currently lists 30 data center locations around the world, including Mumbai, Singapore, Tokyo, London and several locations in the United States.
For a website aimed primarily at US readers, for example, a US location may make sense. If most of your visitors are in India, Kinsta’s Mumbai location is an option.
The important thing is to think about where your audience is located rather than simply picking the data center closest to you.
Configure your WordPress installation
Once you’ve selected the location, Kinsta asks for the information needed to create your WordPress installation.
The WordPress site title is the name assigned to the WordPress site. Depending on your theme, it can appear in places such as the browser tab. You can change it later from WordPress settings, so you don’t need to worry about getting this permanently right during setup.
You’ll also need to create the WordPress administrator username and password.
Kinsta recommends avoiding the username “admin” for security reasons. Choose a unique administrator username instead, and make sure you use a strong password. Kinsta automatically enforces strong passwords during this setup, and you can generate a new password from the interface if necessary.
You’ll then enter the WordPress administrator email address. WordPress uses this address for important notifications, so use an email account you regularly monitor.
Finally, select the language for your WordPress installation. This controls the language of the WordPress interface and doesn’t prevent you from publishing content in another language.
Decide whether you need additional WordPress features
Kinsta also provides several optional installation choices during the setup process.
If you’re building a WordPress Multisite network, you can enable the Multisite option and choose between a subdomain or subdirectory configuration.
For an online store, Kinsta can automatically install WooCommerce during the initial setup. This can save you a step compared with installing the plugin manually after WordPress is ready.
There’s also an option to install Yoast SEO automatically. If you’re already planning to use another SEO plugin, you can leave this option unchecked instead.
For websites that sell digital products, Kinsta also offers an option to automatically install Easy Digital Downloads.
These options aren’t required for a normal WordPress installation, so there’s no need to enable everything simply because it’s available. Choose the components that actually match the type of site you’re building.
What if you don’t want a standard WordPress installation?
Not every Kinsta customer needs a traditional one-click WordPress setup.
The “Empty environment” option creates the infrastructure required to run WordPress but leaves WordPress itself out of the installation. Kinsta specifically points to use cases such as Duplicator migrations and custom Bedrock/Trellis setups.
This is generally something you’d choose when you already know why you need a blank environment. If you’re simply starting a new WordPress website, the standard “Install WordPress” option is the more straightforward route.
Clone an existing Kinsta site instead
If you’re already running a WordPress site on Kinsta, you may not need to start from zero.
The “Clone” option lets you copy an existing live or staging environment to a new site. You select the environment you want to clone, give the new site a name, and continue through the setup process.
There is one important limitation: the data center location is fixed when cloning because Kinsta only supports cloning within the same data center. If you need the cloned site to run from a different location, Kinsta says its Support team can move the site after the cloning process is complete.
Kinsta also notes that non-standard WordPress configurations such as Bedrock or Trellis can require additional attention during cloning because of how database credentials are stored.
Finish creating the site
Once you’ve completed the configuration, click “Continue” on the final screen.
Kinsta will then create the new site. The process takes a few minutes, and MyKinsta will notify you when the installation is ready.
One thing worth knowing is that Kinsta enables its CDN by default on new sites. If you don’t want to use it, Kinsta provides an option to disable the CDN from the site’s Caching settings in MyKinsta.
At this point, you have a functioning Kinsta-hosted WordPress installation. You can then access WordPress, configure your theme and plugins, add your domain, and continue with the rest of your site’s launch process.
Choose the right Kinsta setup before you click Create
For most people starting a completely new website, the workflow is pretty simple: go to Sites, choose Add site, select Create new site, pick Install WordPress, choose an appropriate data center, enter your WordPress credentials and optional components, and let Kinsta handle the installation.
The other two choices are there for more specific situations. Empty environment is useful when you’re bringing your own WordPress structure or migration workflow, while Clone is designed for duplicating an existing Kinsta environment.
The nice part is that you don’t have to manually assemble the basic WordPress stack before you can start working on the website. Kinsta handles that initial infrastructure, leaving you to focus on the site itself.
