Ever felt your laptop chugging along like a rusty engine while desperately clinging to the last dregs of battery life? Or maybe you prioritize raw processing power for intense gaming sessions, even if it means sacrificing a bit of battery endurance. Luckily, Windows offers a handy feature called “power mode” that allows you to strike the perfect balance between performance and battery life, depending on your needs.

Think of power mode as pre-set dials that adjust various system settings to optimize your PC’s behavior. These settings can include things like screen brightness, hard drive spin-down time, and processor speed. In this article, we’ll guide you through the simple process of choosing the right power mode for your Windows 11 PC.

Best power efficiency mode

Let’s face it, sometimes all you need is for your laptop to last through that long work meeting or that cross-country flight. In these situations, the “Best power efficiency” mode becomes your best friend. This mode dials down system performance slightly, focusing on conserving battery life for extended use. Expect your screen to dim a bit sooner, and your processor might not run at its absolute fastest speed. However, these adjustments translate to precious extra minutes (or even hours) of battery life, ensuring you stay productive or entertained on the go.

Best performance mode

For those who demand the absolute most from their machines, “Best performance” mode is the way to go. This mode removes the shackles, allowing your processor to run at full capacity for maximum performance. It’s ideal for graphics-intensive tasks like video editing, running demanding games, or heavy multitasking. Keep in mind that with great power comes greater battery drain. Expect your battery life to be shorter when using this mode, so make sure you have a power outlet nearby.

Balanced mode

Can’t decide between battery life and performance? You’re not alone. That’s where the aptly named “Balanced” mode comes in. This mode strikes a middle ground, adjusting settings to provide a balance between performance and battery efficiency. It’s the perfect option for everyday tasks like browsing the web, checking emails, or working on documents.

How to change power mode in Windows 11

Now that you understand the different power modes, let’s get down to business and show you how to change them on your Windows 11 PC.

  1. Click on the Start menu and navigate to “Settings“.
  2. Within Settings, select “System” and then “Power & battery“.
  3. Under the “Power mode” section, you’ll see a drop-down menu with the three available options: “Best power efficiency,” “Balanced,” and “Best performance.”
  4. Simply click on the desired mode to activate it.

Note: In rare cases, you might encounter a situation where the power mode options are grayed out and unavailable for selection. This usually happens when a custom power plan is active. If you run into this, here’s a quick fix:

  1. Open the Control Panel (you can search for it using the Start menu search bar).
  2. Navigate to “System and Security” and then select “Power Options“.
  3. Within Power Options, you should see a list of available power plans. Choose the “Balanced” plan, and you should then be able to adjust power mode freely within the Settings menu as described earlier.
